Sr. Java Developer (COBOL to Java Modernization) | Columbus, OH (Onsite)

Location: William Green Building, 8th Floor, 30 West Spring Street, Columbus, OH (onsite)
Contract: Through 06/30/2027
Interview: Onsite

About the Role
OIC is looking for a senior Java developer to help understand legacy COBOL applications and redevelop them in Java. You’ll serve as lead Java developer on the main assignment, work in an agile, iterative way with other developers and subject matter experts, and help OIC set and refine its coding standards. Strong performance may lead to additional code rewrite work.

What You’ll Do

  • Act as Sr. Java developer, delivering Java solutions that replace the business-critical functions of the legacy COBOL applications
  • Design, code, test, and document Java application components
  • Work with OIC IT staff and subject matter experts to choose the best solution approach
  • Apply best practices and help establish and refine coding standards
  • Show regular, steady progress in an agile/iterative environment
  • Troubleshoot and fix bugs, and protect the security and integrity of the application
  • Write documentation (flowcharts, narratives, code comments) and train OIC IT staff
  • Coordinate programming activities across the team and resolve questions of intent, accuracy, or feasibility with business and technical personnel

Required Qualifications (10+ years each)

  • Java solution development in a Windows environment
  • Java Persistence API (JPA)
  • SQL
  • RESTful web services
  • JUnit
  • Strong Java (8/11/17+) and object-oriented design, plus Spring, Spring Boot, and Hibernate
  • Microservices experience, plus relational databases (MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server)
  • Git and CI/CD tools (Jenkins, Maven, Gradle)
  • Ability to propose, document, and deliver software lifecycle solutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and leadership skills

Highly Desired

  • Experience reading and understanding COBOL code
  • Angular 4+ or Blazor, and single-page application experience
  • AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform, plus Docker and Kubernetes
  • Eclipse and Visual Studio Code
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, IT, or a related field
