The Role

We're representing a UK fintech whose technology is used by businesses across the payments and financial-services space.

They're now looking to add a Backend Engineer to a growing engineering function. This is an opportunity to join a team where Back End engineering is central to the product, you'll be working on systems that need to be fast, resilient, secure and capable of handling increasingly sophisticated workloads.

The environment is particularly suited to an engineer who enjoys modern cloud engineering rather than traditional application development.

We're looking for roughly 6+ years of relevant commercial experience, but depth of experience matters more than a particular number.

You could come from fintech, SaaS, payments, platforms or another technically demanding environment.

This role would suit someone who has moved beyond simply being a developer who can build features.

The core stack includes:

• Python | Go | TypeScript
• GCP | Kubernetes | ArgoCD | GitHub Actions
• PostgreSQL | BigQuery | Vector Databases | Blob Storage
• REST | GraphQL | gRPC
• Pub/Sub | Vertex AI
• Prometheus | Grafana | Sentry

What matters is that you've already worked on serious Back End systems and that the technology above is the kind of environment you want to move into.

In particular, experience with Python/Go, Kubernetes, GCP, PostgreSQL and distributed systems would put you in a strong position.

Role Responsibilities:

• Building
  New services, APIs and Back End capabilities across Python, Go and TypeScript.

• Designing
  Working out how systems should interact, where data should live and how services should behave under load or failure.

• Scaling
  Making systems more performant and resilient as usage and complexity increase.

• Operating
  Getting involved in the real-world side of engineering - deployments, monitoring, incidents, observability and production performance.

• Evolving
  Improving existing architecture rather than accepting technical debt as inevitable.

• Experimenting
  Using AI and new engineering tools to find better and faster ways of solving problems.

Essential Skills Required:

• Backend development using Python, Go, TypeScript or similar
• REST, GraphQL or gRPC APIs
• Kubernetes and cloud platforms
• PostgreSQL and strong SQL
• Event-driven or asynchronous architectures
• Queues, retries and distributed processing
• System design and architectural decision-making
• Automated testing
• Monitoring and observability
• Performance optimisation
• Secure application development
• CI/CD and modern deployment practices
