Job Description

Salary: $75.00 - $78.00 /hr.

Summary:
We are looking for an experienced Java Backend Engineer to design, build, and operate scalable microservices in a cloud-native environment. The ideal candidate is a strong Java/Spring Boot developer who is comfortable working with containerized deployments, distributed databases, and API management platforms. They should also actively use modern AI coding assistants to accelerate development, improve code quality, and speed up delivery.

Responsibilities:

Design, develop, and maintain microservices using Java and Spring Boot.
Containerize applications using Docker and deploy/manage them on Kubernetes.
Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitLab (GitLab CI/CD).
Work with Cassandra for high-throughput, distributed data storage.
Configure, secure, and manage APIs through Apigee (API gateway, policies, proxies).
Use AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code) to write, review, refactor, and debug code more efficiently.
Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and sprint planning.
Troubleshoot production issues and contribute to on-call rotation as needed.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (DevOps, QA, Product) to deliver features end-to-end.
Write unit, integration, and automated tests to ensure code quality and reliability.

Qualifications:

Strong hands-on experience building production-grade applications in Java.
Practical, hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools like GitHub Copilot and/or Claude Code.
Deep experience building REST APIs and microservices with Spring Boot.
Experience deploying, scaling, and managing containerized workloads on Kubernetes.
Experience building and managing container images with Docker.
Experience with version control and CI/CD pipeline configuration using GitLab.
Experience with data modeling and querying in a distributed NoSQL database like Cassandra.
Experience with API gateway configuration, proxy development, and policy management.

Skills:

Experience with other cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Azure).
Familiarity with messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
Exposure to Helm charts / Kubernetes operators.
Experience with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/EFK stack).
Knowledge of security best practices (OAuth2, JWT, mTLS).
Experience with Agile/Scrum methodology.
Adding more resources to the project with an AI background.
Apigee but not mandatory.
Good team player, communication skills.

Pay Transparency: The typical base pay for this role across the U.S. is: $75.00 - $78.00 /hour. As a non-exempt position, this role will be eligible for overtime, at 1.5 times the base rate, or as required by state or local law. Final offer amounts, within the base pay set forth above, are determined by factors including your relevant skills, education, and experience.
