About the Role
Our firm is seeking a Java/Kotlin Software Developer (Backend) on behalf of a leading Fortune 50 retailer and technology-driven organization. This company operates one of the largest digital commerce, supply chain, and enterprise technology ecosystems in the industry, supporting millions of customers through modern, scalable platforms and services.
In this role, you will serve as a senior engineering specialist responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining highly scalable backend services and applications. You will work within a collaborative Agile environment, helping shape application architecture, influencing technical design decisions, and delivering robust solutions that support critical business operations. This position also includes participation in a rotating on-call support model for products operating in a 24/7 environment.

Job Description
As a Java/Kotlin Software Developer, you will provide technical leadership and hands-on development expertise across backend applications, services, and distributed systems. You will translate architectural concepts into practical technical solutions and apply modern software engineering principles to build reliable, high-performing products.
Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, test, and maintain enterprise-scale backend applications and services.
Lead architecture discussions and contribute to technical design decisions.
Build and enhance microservices and event-driven systems.
Design and develop RESTful APIs and backend integrations.
Develop Kafka consumers, producers, and event-processing solutions.
Perform code reviews, design reviews, testing, debugging, and performance optimization.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues, identifying root causes and implementing long-term solutions.
Promote software quality through test-driven development and automated testing practices.
Implement and maintain observability and monitoring solutions.
Support CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes.
Collaborate with product, engineering, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver business-critical solutions.
Contribute to operational readiness, including change management, deployment practices, incident management, and on-call support.
Ensure data quality standards are embedded throughout data acquisition, storage, processing, and operational workflows.

Technology Environment
The engineering ecosystem includes:

Distributed microservices architectures.
Event-driven systems leveraging Apache Kafka.
Spring Boot and Micronaut-based services.
Kotlin as the primary backend programming language.
Mature CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment processes.
Cloud-ready and containerized applications.
High levels of automation, observability, logging, and monitoring.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications

5+ years of professional software development experience in enterprise or large-scale environments.
Strong proficiency in Kotlin and/or Java.
Experience developing applications using Spring Boot and/or Micronaut.
Strong experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservices.
Experience working with Apache Kafka, including producers, consumers, and stream processing.
Expertise with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle, or similar platforms.
Strong SQL development and database design skills.
Experience with Git, Maven and/or Gradle.
Experience with CI/CD tools, practices, and deployment pipelines.
Familiarity with cloud-native application development.
Experience with container technologies and orchestration platforms such as Docker and Kubernetes.
Experience implementing observability and monitoring solutions such as OpenTelemetry and Grafana.
Proficiency with test-driven development and testing frameworks such as JUnit and K6.
Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and performance tuning capabilities.
Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to participate in a rotating on-call support schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience working in a consulting or contract engineering capacity within large enterprise environments.
Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
Experience with NoSQL databases.
Knowledge of advanced architectural patterns such as Event Sourcing and CQRS.
Experience building and maintaining automated end-to-end testing frameworks for enterprise applications.
Understanding of machine learning, intelligent systems, natural language processing, or data-driven decision-making solutions.
Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT.
Advanced knowledge of Git-based development workflows and Agile delivery methodologies.
