Automatic Pool Covers, Inc. is seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Mechanical Engineer / Designer to support the design, development, and continuous improvement of our automatic pool cover systems.

In this role, you will contribute to new product development, improve existing designs, support manufacturing operations, and help drive product quality, reliability, and cost efficiency. You will work closely with production, quality, purchasing, suppliers, and customer support to develop practical engineering solutions and bring products from concept through production.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer or experienced mechanical designer who enjoys solving problems, working with physical products, and making a direct impact on product performance and manufacturing efficiency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and improve mechanical components and assemblies for automatic pool cover systems.
  • Engauge in new product development from concept through production launch.
  • Create and revise 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Participate in design reviews, prototype builds, and product testing.
  • Ensure products comply with applicable engineering standards and safety requirements.
  • Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities through product and process improvements.
  • Provide engineering support for manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with Quality to investigate product failures and identify root causes.
  • Work with Purchasing and suppliers on component sourcing, quality improvements, and cost reductions.
  • Assist with Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and document control.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Travel occasionally to suppliers, dealers, or customer locations as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Design preferred, or 5+ years of related engineering experience.

  • 3+ years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.

  • Experience with sheet metal, aluminum fabrication, machining, injection molding, and mechanical assemblies is preferred.

  • Experience supporting manufacturing operations and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and manufacturing processes.

  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong communication and project management abilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software.

  • Experience with ERP systems and engineering documentation.

  • Knowledge of tolerance stack-up analysis.

  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).

  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Kaizen.

  • Understanding of electric motors, drive systems, bearings, gearboxes, and corrosion-resistant materials is a plus.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in both an office and manufacturing environment.

  • Frequent walking throughout the production facility.

  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally.

  • Ability to inspect products, machinery, and manufacturing processes on the production floor.
