Overview
Our client is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to support the development, integration, testing, and validation of ruggedized electronic equipment for military and mission-critical applications.
This role offers the opportunity to work on complex hardware programs throughout the entire product lifecycle, from requirements development and concept design through manufacturing, environmental testing, and deployment. The ideal candidate will have experience designing rugged electro-mechanical systems, leading technical teams, and developing innovative engineering solutions that meet demanding performance, cost, and schedule requirements.

Overview
Our client is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to support the development, integration, testing, and validation of ruggedized electronic equipment for military and mission-critical applications.
This role offers the opportunity to work on complex hardware programs throughout the entire product lifecycle, from requirements development and concept design through manufacturing, environmental testing, and deployment. The ideal candidate will have experience designing rugged electro-mechanical systems, leading technical teams, and developing innovative engineering solutions that meet demanding performance, cost, and schedule requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop ruggedized electro-mechanical and/or opto-mechanical hardware for advanced systems.
- Support all phases of the product lifecycle, including:
- Requirements analysis
- Concept development
- Detailed design
- Manufacturing support
- Environmental testing
- Product validation
- Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, including mechanical, electrical, systems, manufacturing, and program management organizations.
- Lead technical efforts and support engineering teams throughout project execution.
- Develop innovative solutions to complex technical challenges while balancing performance, cost, and schedule requirements.
- Create and maintain mechanical designs using CAD tools such as Siemens NX or similar platforms.
- Manage assigned project schedules, technical scope, and engineering deliverables.
- Identify and communicate technical risks, issues, and mitigation strategies to stakeholders.
- Support hardware integration, qualification testing, and production activities.
- Review technical work products and provide guidance to peer engineers.
- Present technical solutions and project status during design reviews and customer briefings.
- Interface with customers, stakeholders, and leadership to ensure successful program execution.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or another STEM-related discipline with 5+ years of experience, OR
- Master's degree with 3+ years of experience, OR
- PhD with 1+ year of experience.
- An additional 4 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Active U.S. Government Secret Clearance.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Special Program Access (SAP).
- Minimum 5 years of experience designing and developing ruggedized electro-mechanical and/or opto-mechanical hardware.
- Minimum 5 years of experience using mechanical CAD software such as Siemens NX or similar design tools.
- Demonstrated success applying innovative engineering solutions to complex technical challenges.
- Experience leading engineering efforts and reviewing technical work products.
- Experience presenting technical information during design reviews, engineering reviews, and customer briefings.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience performing:
- Thermal analysis
- Structural analysis
- Mechanical performance evaluations
- Working knowledge of military and commercial specifications applicable to the design and testing of ruggedized electronic hardware.
- Proficiency with:
- Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
- ASME Y14 standards
- Experience leading Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) and mentoring junior engineers.
- Experience driving collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, and program management teams.
- Familiarity with Earned Value Management (EVM) and project performance metrics.
- Experience designing, manufacturing, and integrating electronic assemblies, including printed circuit board (PCB) hardware.
- Experience supporting technical proposals and cost estimates.
- Demonstrated leadership in process improvement, engineering excellence, or knowledge-sharing initiatives.
