Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking an AutoCAD/GIS Drafter to support transportation and civil engineering projects by creating high-quality visual exhibits, maps, and presentation graphics. This role works closely with engineers and project teams to develop clear, accurate, and visually effective materials used for project development, stakeholder communication, public outreach, and technical presentations.

Unlike traditional drafting roles focused on full construction plan production, this position emphasizes creation of graphical exhibits, roadway visualizations, location mapping, and other project-specific illustrations that communicate engineering concepts and project information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create high-quality visual exhibits and technical graphics using AutoCAD for transportation and civil engineering projects.

  • Collaborate directly with engineers and project managers to illustrate specific design elements, project locations, roadway features, and engineering concepts.

  • Develop maps, exhibits, and presentation materials that align with transportation industry and Caltrans visual standards.

  • Utilize GIS tools and AutoCAD-integrated mapping technologies to incorporate aerial imagery, roadway networks, demographic data, environmental constraints, and other spatial information.

  • Produce publication-ready graphics for reports, presentations, public meetings, and stakeholder communications.

  • Convert AutoCAD-generated graphics into high-quality PDF deliverables using Adobe Acrobat and related tools for web distribution, presentations, and electronic sharing.

  • Manage electronic file organization, file transfers, version control, and remote collaboration workflows across project teams.

  • Review exhibits and graphics for accuracy, consistency, visual quality, and adherence to project requirements.

  • Support multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and evolving project needs.

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of professional AutoCAD drafting experience, preferably within civil engineering, transportation, infrastructure, or public works environments.

  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD and drafting best practices.

  • Experience utilizing GIS data, mapping layers, aerial imagery, or spatial datasets within AutoCAD workflows.

  • Ability to create clear, organized, and visually compelling technical exhibits and graphics.

  • Experience producing and formatting professional PDF deliverables using Adobe Acrobat or similar tools.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

  • Ability to work independently while taking technical direction from engineers and project stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting highway, roadway, transit, transportation, or public infrastructure projects.

  • Familiarity with Caltrans standards, conventions, and transportation-related graphics.

  • Experience with ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, or other GIS platforms.

  • Background creating public outreach materials, project exhibits, environmental maps, or presentation graphics.

  • Understanding of roadway design terminology, transportation planning, or civil engineering concepts.

  • Experience working within consulting engineering firms, transportation agencies, or public-sector environments.

Technical Skills

  • AutoCAD

  • GIS Platforms (ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, or similar)

  • AutoCAD GIS integrations and mapping tools

  • Adobe Acrobat Professional

  • Microsoft Office Suite

  • PDF creation, editing, and publishing tools

  • File management and remote collaboration platforms
