Job Description

On-Site Smart Hands/Data Centre Systems Support Engineer - 3 months Rolling - Chesterfield (Hybrid) - INSIDE IR35

We are looking for one to two proactive, physically confident data centre engineers to take local ownership of hardware health and rapid incident response at a large-scale AI cluster site in Chesterfield. You will diagnose server, optics and fibre faults, direct the third-party facility team and support new cluster rollouts as they come online. This is a hands-on role at the heart of a major AI infrastructure build, working with cutting-edge GPU, InfiniBand and liquid-cooled hardware, and it is part of a 3-year project. You will be on-site 4 days per week, and you must live within 1-2 hours of the site for call-outs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage hardware health across high-density GPU server racks
  • Troubleshoot optics, Switches, fibre and server failures, and verify physical link status
  • Carry out physical inspections, break-fix work and component swaps
  • Direct and coordinate the facility team and other third-party smart hands
  • Track hardware issues and RMAs through to resolution with vendors
  • Manage firmware, patching and infrastructure life cycle activities
  • Work remotely via console, IPMI/BMC and BIOS-level staging when off site
  • Support hardware rollout and cluster expansions, including installation, integration and acceptance testing
  • Support the transition of new capacity into live service
  • Join the on-call rota and respond to physical call-outs

What You Will Ideally Bring:

  • Proven hands-on experience in high-density data centre hardware and rack operations, diagnosing and swapping components (desktop or office IT support alone is not enough)
  • Hands-on optics, transceivers and fibre diagnostics, including Fluke testing and physical link verification
  • Linux CLI and out-of-band management (IPMI, BMC, BIOS)
  • Directing third-party smart hands, tracking RMAs to closure and managing firmware and patching
  • Experience with rack and stack rollouts, installation and acceptance testing of new infrastructure
  • GPU server platforms (NVIDIA, HPE) (desirable)

Contract Details:

  • Duration: 3 months
  • Rate: £320 per day - Inside IR35
  • Location: Chesterfield (Hybrid)
  • Start Date: ASAP
