Job Description

Solar Business Development Manager

Pay: £55,000.00-£65,000.00 per year

Job Description:

Location: Stonehouse Gloucestershire, National Region

Salary: £55,000-£65,000 + Car Allowance + Performance Bonus

Role: Full Time, Permanent

The Role

Our Client is looking for an experienced and commercially driven Solar Business Development Manager to support the continued growth of our commercial Solar PV business.

This is a new business generation role.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable identifying prospective customers, opening new doors, developing relationships and converting opportunities into profitable Solar PV projects.

The successful candidate will be expected to actively create their own pipeline rather than rely primarily on inbound enquiries or an established account base. You will identify target clients and markets, establish relationships with key decision-makers and take opportunities from initial engagement through to contract award.

You will be supported by our internal technical, estimating, commercial and delivery teams, allowing you to concentrate on what you do best: finding opportunities, developing customers and winning business.

What You'll Be Responsible For

  • Proactively generating new commercial Solar PV opportunities through direct prospecting, networking, referrals and development of new routes to market.
  • Developing relationships with commercial and industrial clients, Tier 1 contractors, public-sector organisations, consultants, specifiers and other key market stakeholders.
  • Identifying new customers and sectors where the client can develop long-term commercial relationships.
  • Building and maintaining a strong, credible and qualified sales pipeline.
  • Establishing relationships with key decision-makers rather than relying solely on tender portals and reactive enquiries.
  • Understanding customer requirements and developing opportunities from initial conversation through site assessment, proposal, negotiation and contract award.
  • Working with our technical team to develop appropriate and deliverable Solar PV solutions.
  • Working with the commercial and estimating teams to develop competitive proposals while protecting required project margins.
  • Leading client meetings, presentations, commercial discussions and negotiations.
  • Maintaining ownership of opportunities through the complete sales process and ensuring clear next actions and realistic forecast dates.
  • Ensuring opportunities are properly qualified before significant estimating and technical resource is committed.
  • Maintaining accurate CRM/pipeline information and providing clear sales forecasts and activity reporting.
  • Supporting a structured handover into the project delivery team following contract award.

The existing role scope also makes the Business Development Manager the primary client contact through the sales process and gives them ownership from initial engagement through to LOI, contract or formal instruction. Business Development Manager -

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone with a demonstrable record of winning new business, ideally within commercial Solar PV, renewable energy, M&E, construction or a closely related technical sector.

You should be confident creating opportunities where no existing relationship exists, engaging senior decision-makers and developing a commercial proposition over what can sometimes be a lengthy sales cycle.

Knowledge of commercial Solar PV is highly desirable, but equally important is a proven ability to develop relationships, build a genuine pipeline and convert opportunities into orders.

You will need to be commercially aware and comfortable discussing project value, margin, programme, scope and contractual requirements. You do not need to be a Solar PV designer, but you should understand the technology sufficiently to have credible conversations with customers and to work effectively with our technical team. Experience in wider renewable technologies such as ASHP and GSHP would be advantageous.

The Person

You are likely to be someone who enjoys the front end of the sales process: identifying target organisations, making contact, securing meetings, understanding what drives the customer and turning that relationship into a genuine project opportunity.

This role would suit someone who isproactive, persistent and commercially minded, with the confidence to work independently while drawing on the wider resources of the business when an opportunity begins to develop.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate where they have personally created and converted new business, rather than solely managed inherited accounts or responded to incoming tenders.

Our Client is an established renewable energy contractor delivering decarbonisation projects across the commercial, public and residential sectors.

Our capabilities include commercial Solar PV alongside a broad range of renewable heating and energy technologies, supported by in-house technical and delivery expertise.

This gives our Business Development team the ability to approach customers as a credible delivery partner rather than simply a product reseller.
