Position Title: Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Location: Miami, FL, 33142
Duration: 1 Year
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services a wide variety of light, medium and heavy duty automotive equipment and machinery which includes draglines, road rollers, bulldozers, road graders, front end loaders, ditching machines, back hoes, sewer maintenance equipment, air compressors, hydro cranes, compacting garbage trucks, as well as various types of special duty and conventional trucks.
- Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and overhauls motors of a wide range of automotive fire equipment and makes tuning adjustments necessary to insure ease in starting and effective operation for long periods of uninterrupted service.
- Repairs, overhauls and maintains specialized equipment on pumping, ladder and other automotive fire equipment including pumps, valves, power take offs, hydraulic systems, and steering mechanisms. Repairs and builds special bodies.
- Overhauls and services assemblies and accessories such as single and two speed rear axles, multi-speed transmissions (from one to ten speeds), Allison automatic transmissions and hydraulic, compressed air, vacuum and electric controls, systems and components.
- Changes tires and repairs flats on a variety of heavy automotive equipment.
- May operate fuel delivery trucks and delivers gasoline, diesel fuel and/or miscellaneous lubricants to various city facilities.
- Operates various types of shop equipment, machinery, precision instruments, specialized tools and devices such as dynamometers, boring bars, valve refacing and reseating equipment, micrometers, dial gauges, wheel alignment gauges, clutch cover assembly devices, power saws, grinders, drill presses and lathes.
- Makes tests to locate defects in operation and as a check on repairs before returning equipment back in to service.
- May supervise unskilled workers.
- Makes road calls to service equipment in the field.
- Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or its equivalent or completion of a training program at the high school or vocational level on the area of automotive or heavy equipment mechanics or three to six (3 - 6) current Automotive Services Excellence (A.S.E.) or automotive manufacturer certificates in varied automotive specialties, plus considerable (2 – 4 years) in automotive mechanic experience, one (1) year of which must have been in the maintenance and repair of heavy automotive equipment.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent and some (6 months – 2 years) of the required experience.
- Considerable knowledge of the construction, design, repair and adjustment of a wide variety of both conventional and specialized heavy equipment and machinery.
- Considerable knowledge of the usual types of automotive tools and equipment, as well as the special tools, gauges, machinery and shop equipment used in repair, servicing and maintenance of heavy equipment.
- Ability to detect by inspection any worn, defective or improperly adjusted part of the assembly.
- Ability to supervise a small group of Heavy Equipment Mechanic Helpers.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to keep records of repair and service operations.
- Skill in the diagnoses of defects and failures of specialized and heavy equipment, and in the use and operation of specialized tools and equipment of the trade.
- Excellent mechanical aptitude, coordination and dexterity.
- Good physical condition.
- Frequently uses assorted hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, ratchets, hammer, sockets, etc.), and may use heavy impact air wrench, alignment machine, computer (Faster Client Server program), diagnostic tools (scanners, analyzers, etc.) and other related equipment.
Working Environment:
- The noise level in the work environment is occasionally noisy. Work is frequently performed inside and occasionally around hazardous machinery. The employee is occasionally exposed to high temperature, fumes, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
- While performing the duties of the job, the employee is occasionally required to sit, push, pull and balance. Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, squat, knee, balance, and use hand to finger, feel or operate objects. Occasionally, heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.) is required. Driving motor vehicles and heavy equipment is occasionally required. Climbing stairs and ladders is occasionally required. Hand eye coordination is necessary to operate equipment. Specific visual abilities required of this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
