Job description

Your Opportunity

This role works as an experienced civil and process design professional on a broad range of water and wastewater infrastructure assignments. The role independently evaluates, selects, specifies, and designs civil systems and project components within established practice guidelines, while coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and applying sound judgment to resolve technical issues. Assignments are broad, varied, and diverse in scope and may include responsibility for specific components of larger projects or, with guidance, small, straightforward projects. Responsibilities also include construction phase services, including onsite support such as a resident project representative or inspector, and construction administration.
In general, this role performs civil engineering design and project delivery activities under general supervision, contributes to process and quality improvements, maintains effective client and agency communication, and provides mentoring and informal guidance to junior staff, including task coordination, coaching, and work review when appropriate.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Perform civil engineering design for water and related infrastructure projects, including engineering drawings, hydraulic system calculations, pipe design calculations, design criteria, technical reports, cost estimates, and regulatory permit applications.
  • Independently prepare and coordinate engineering project documents, technical memoranda, client presentations, and communications associated with assigned project deliverables.
  • Participate in and, when appropriate, lead portions of meetings with clients, contractors, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies to confirm goals, requirements, site conditions, technical challenges, decisions, and follow-up actions.
  • Develop and coordinate designs through sketches, electronic models, calculations, diagrams, and other visual formats; identify critical connections and patterns in project information and data.
  • Analyze technical issues, interpret information, exercise independent judgment, and select methods and solutions generally within standard practice guidelines; recommend and implement corrective actions.
  • Initiate collaboration and coordinate with other disciplines to maintain compatibility with the design intent and support integrated project delivery.
  • Develop and edit project-specific specifications and coordinate the relationship between drawings, specifications, calculations, and other contract documents.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals, respond to requests for information, prepare site observation reports, support construction-phase issue resolution, and perform other contract administration tasks.
  • Provide on-site construction phase support to identify and resolve issues on active construction projects.
  • Evaluate and select civil and process systems, equipment, and materials based on applicable engineering principles, standards, codes, regulations, constructability, risk, cost, and client requirements.
  • Perform value engineering and cost estimating; identify resources, track assigned budgets and expenses, and provide accurate information to support project financial performance.
  • Provide mentoring and informal guidance to junior staff; assist with assigning tasks, coaching, checking work, and creating development opportunities through timely feedback.
  • Prepare process engineering feasibility studies and basis of design reports by considering design impacts and evaluating engineering solutions and industry standards.
  • Confirm adherence to construction specifications during each phase of a project. Monitor project progress, inspect construction sites, and verify calculations and placements.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Practical understanding of concepts relevant to civil and process engineering design, including gravity and pressure systems, facilities, water and wastewater treatment processes geotechnical, dams, survey, storm water/drainage design, erosion and sediment control, and grading.
  • Ability to independently recognize developing technical problems, evaluate causes and consequences, and initiate appropriate corrective actions using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes, statutes, regulations, legal requirements, and design standards in relevant jurisdictions, with established or developing relationships with reviewing agencies.
  • Ability to interpret guidelines and procedures, analyze issues, and make timely decisions in common situations involving moderate complexity, risk, or ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate collaboration, integrate input from diverse disciplines, and assume additional responsibilities needed to achieve project and client goals.
  • Strong understanding of all phases of engineering document production and the relationship among calculations, drawings, specifications, models, reports, and construction documents.
  • Strong understanding of construction phase engineering including contract management, administration, record keeping and as-builts, resident project engineering, scheduling, and change management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant discipline software, which may include AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bluebeam, or comparable civil design and hydraulic modeling applications.
  • Ability to manage assigned scope, schedule, resources, quality, risk, and cost for project components and small, straightforward projects, with guidance as appropriate.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical and business concepts to clients, reviewing agencies, project teams, and medium-sized groups, adapting communication style to the audience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated client service, accountability, adaptability, quality focus, continuous learning, and commitment to health, safety, security, and the environment.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering.
  • Engineer-in-Training certification working toward licensure as a Professional Engineer is preferred, or an equivalent combination of credentials and relevant experience appropriate to assigned responsibilities.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
