Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals, and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture.

We are looking for an assistant Europe editor to plan, commission and edit for Guardian Europe.

Our Europe coverage delivers fearless, incisive journalism that connects European politics, economics, culture, and ideas to an engaged global readership.

This is a permanent NUJ contract.

About the role

  • Generate opinion pieces, columns, first-person essays and other forms of original journalism from and about Europe to engage the global audience
  • Identify great Europe-based thinkers and writers and find exciting new voices
  • Work closely with both established Europe columnists and new contributors, usually writing in English as a second language, to shape copy and test arguments
  • Edit to ensure pieces are factual, relevant, lively and engaging; liaising with the legal department on accuracy and with production editors through to publication
  • Find the most engaging ways of airing issues and debates including via multimedia content.
  • Develop ideas for new projects, series and formats that will help to grow Guardian Europe
  • Contribute to the smooth running and management of a busy strand
  • Help with commissioning/planning Europe newsletters

About you

  • Demonstrable experience of working as a journalist or editor on a national or other major European media outlet
  • Proven experience of commissioning and editing opinion columns and essays
  • Proven experience of editing clean, lively, relevant, sharp and engaging copy
  • A knowledge and understanding of European current affairs, European politics/geopolitics and economics, how the EU works, Europe in the world, cultural, societal and lifestyle trends and debates across Europe, ideally informed by professional or lived experience in continental Europe
  • A strong network of European writer, commentator and expert contacts
  • Fluency in at least one modern European language
  • An understanding of how Guardian journalism can be delivered across multiple formats including video, audio and social, with a track record of working with multimedia teams.
  • An aptitude for generating sharp, original, timely ideas from geopolitics and policy to culture and lifestyle.
  • A thorough knowledge of UK media law.
  • Ideally you will have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to the role.

We actively encourage applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media.

We operate in a hybrid environment working at least three days a week from our offices in King’s Cross in London.

The salary band for this role starts at £50,695, with the final offer determined by the successful candidate's skills, experience, and responsibilities.
