About the Role:

As our Engineer I – Specialized, you will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing the hotel's building systems with a focus on HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. You will help ensure guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house spaces, and essential building systems remain safe, comfortable, and fully operational.

This role is ideal for a hands-on engineering professional with strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining a high-quality hotel environment.

Your Impact – Property & Guest Experience

You will play a critical role in maintaining the comfort, safety, and functionality of M Social Sunnyvale. Your technical expertise and responsiveness will help prevent disruptions, resolve maintenance issues quickly, and provide a seamless experience for both guests and employees.

What You'll Be Doing

HVAC Systems

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair HVAC equipment and systems
  • Monitor heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems throughout the property
  • Respond promptly to guest room and public area temperature concerns
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on HVAC equipment
  • Identify potential equipment issues and recommend corrective action
  • Assist with maintaining filters, belts, coils, motors, pumps, and related components
  • Monitor building automation and temperature control systems as applicable

Electrical Systems

  • Troubleshoot and perform basic repairs to electrical systems and equipment
  • Inspect lighting fixtures, switches, outlets, breakers, and related components
  • Replace lamps, fixtures, switches, and other electrical components as permitted
  • Respond to electrical maintenance requests throughout the hotel
  • Assist with preventive maintenance of electrical equipment
  • Follow proper electrical safety procedures and applicable regulations
  • Escalate complex electrical issues to qualified personnel or management

Plumbing Systems

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair plumbing fixtures and systems
  • Respond to leaks, clogged drains, running toilets, and other plumbing concerns
  • Repair or replace faucets, valves, fixtures, and related components as appropriate
  • Monitor water systems and identify potential leaks or equipment issues
  • Assist with preventive maintenance of plumbing systems
  • Respond quickly to water-related emergencies to minimize property damage

General Engineering & Maintenance

  • Complete daily work orders and maintenance requests accurately and efficiently
  • Conduct inspections of guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house spaces
  • Perform preventive maintenance according to established schedules
  • Maintain engineering tools, equipment, and work areas
  • Assist with general building maintenance as needed
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities
  • Respond to emergency maintenance situations as required

Guest Experience

  • Respond promptly and professionally to guest maintenance requests
  • Communicate with guests in a courteous and respectful manner when performing repairs
  • Minimize disruption to guests while completing maintenance work
  • Follow up on guest-related maintenance concerns to ensure they are resolved
  • Maintain a professional appearance and positive attitude while working throughout the property

Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with Engineering Supervisors, Managers, and other Engineering team members
  • Communicate maintenance concerns with Front Office, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, and other departments
  • Assist other Engineering team members with complex maintenance projects
  • Communicate equipment failures, safety concerns, and operational issues promptly
  • Support the team during emergencies and high-priority maintenance situations

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all hotel safety policies and procedures
  • Follow applicable OSHA, fire, life-safety, and building requirements
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Follow safe procedures when working with electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas
  • Report hazardous conditions, accidents, and equipment failures immediately
  • Follow proper procedures when handling tools, chemicals, and equipment
  • Passion for hospitality and maintaining an exceptional guest experience
  • Strong mechanical and troubleshooting abilities
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, and/or plumbing systems
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve maintenance issues

Technical / Role-Specific Requirements

  • Minimum 1–2 years of relevant engineering, facilities, maintenance, or trade experience preferred
  • Strong working knowledge in at least one specialized area: HVAC, electrical, or plumbing
  • General knowledge of the other building systems is preferred
  • Ability to safely use hand and power tools
  • Ability to read and follow equipment manuals and technical instructions
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use electronic work-order systems
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform repairs within the scope of training and qualifications
  • Relevant trade certification or license is preferred, where applicable

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous hotel Engineering or Facilities experience preferred
  • HVAC certification or EPA certification is a plus
  • Electrical or plumbing trade experience is beneficial
  • Experience with building automation systems is a plus
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) preferred
  • Previous experience working with commercial or hospitality properties
  • Bilingual abilities are a plus

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to bend, reach, stoop, kneel, and climb stairs
  • Ability to work from ladders and elevated areas when required
  • Ability to work in mechanical rooms, guest rooms, public areas, and outdoor spaces
  • Ability to safely use hand and power tools
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures and environmental conditions
  • Ability to respond quickly to maintenance emergencies

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Technical school, trade school, or vocational training in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or a related field preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience will be considered
