Job Description
Title: Sr. Electro-Mechanical Engineer
Location: Sunnyvale, CA (Onsite
Exp: 9-18 years
Onsite/Hybrid
Responsibilities:
- Define mechanical verification and validation methodologies for each of the different systems by working with researchers, architects and product design teams
- Perform core function for verification of thermal, vibration, mechanical stress testing, etc
- Define and track detailed test plans for the different modules and top-level systems
- Define, architect, design and drive implementation of scalable test infrastructure and custom mechanical test fixtures
- Keep track of coverage metrics and bugs encountered and resolutions
- Own execution, interpretation and reporting of mechanical system-level verification and validation work
- Drive FMEA, failure analysis, tolerance analysis, gauge R&R, and the GD&T activities supporting product scalability in close collaboration with process, manufacturing and REL teams
- Support system bring-up and debug activities
- Perform analysis on large datasets to summarize results and clearly communicate test plans results
- Manage external vendors for test fixture development, execution and data collection and review vendor test reports and ensure compliance with requirements.
- Design, build, and qualify electro-mechanical test fixtures and rigs — motorized/actuated stages, load and displacement fixtures, automated cycling and don/doff testers, vibration and drop setups
- Implement machine I/O and control: sensor and actuator wiring, motion control (steppers/servos), microcontrollers/PLCs, and digital/analog I/O interfaces between test hardware and host software
- Apply statistical rigor: DOE, sample size and confidence justification, Weibull/reliability analysis, GR&R, SPC
- Evaluate, specify, and justify capital test equipment; manage vendor technical evaluations, quotes, acceptance testing, and commissioning
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers and technicians, and raise the team's overall test-methodology bar
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field, and/or equivalent practical experience
- 8+ years of experience in electro-mechanical engineering with a demonstrated track record in mechanical validation, verification, or reliability test
- Demonstrated experience authoring and executing mechanical validation and reliability test plans (e.g., drop, vibration, fatigue/life cycling, environmental, HALT/HASS/ALT) with defined acceptance criteria
- Hands-on experience designing and building test fixtures and instrumented rigs, including sensor selection, mounting, calibration, and measurement-uncertainty assessment
- Proficiency with Python for test automation, instrument control, and data analysis (e.g., NumPy/pandas or equivalent)
- Experience with I/O and data acquisition: analog/digital I/O, DAQ hardware, serial interfaces (SPI/I2C/UART/USB/Ethernet), sensor signal conditioning, and motion control
- Experience interpreting mechanical drawings and applying GD&T, and using metrology and inspection equipment (CMM, optical/vision measurement, 3D scanning)
- Experience applying statistical methods to test design and interpretation (DOE, sample size justification, Weibull, SPC)
Preferred Qualifications:
- MS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
- Experience validating consumer electronics products, particularly compact or highly integrated form factors
- Experience with dynamic and environmental test methods and the standards that govern them (e.g., vibration, shock, transport, and environmental exposure standards)
- Experience with optical, non-contact, or full-field measurement techniques for displacement, deformation, or motion
- Experience with instrumentation for force, pressure, or load distribution measurement
- Experience with FEA or simulation-to-test correlation
- Experience building automated test cells and the supporting software infrastructure (test frameworks, databases, dashboards)
- Experience owning capital equipment specification, vendor selection, and lab build-out
- Experience mentoring engineers and technicians and standardizing test methods across teams
- Develop Python-based automation for test control, data acquisition, and analysis; build reusable analysis pipelines and dashboards so results are reproducible rather than one-off
