Job description

Software Engineer

The Role

We’re hiring a Software Engineer to maintain and grow the platform that clinicians rely on every day. You’ll work across the whole stack and in both of our main repositories: the SvelteKit front end and the Python services that power document generation with large language models. You’ll take features from idea to production, keep the platform fast, reliable and cost-effective, and work closely with our Product Engineer and engineering leadership to turn the roadmap into shippable work. You’ll also help set the engineering standard for the team through thoughtful code review and sound technical judgement.

This role suits a broad, highly capable engineer who enjoys owning problems end to end rather than staying in one layer. You’ll be comfortable moving from a Svelte component to a FastAPI service to a database migration in a single afternoon, and you’ll enjoy the detective work of tracing a slow request or getting to the root cause of a production incident. You’ll lead in some areas and learn from teammates in others, and you’ll care as much about quality, safety and maintainability as you do about shipping.

About Us

Lyrebird Health is transforming the quality and accessibility of healthcare by automating clinicians’ most time-consuming tasks.

Thousands of clinicians across multiple disciplines use Lyrebird every day in environments where accuracy, safety, and time matter deeply. Everything we build is grounded in earning trust, reducing cognitive load, and delivering meaningful impact at scale.

What you’ll do

  • Deliver features end to end, from Postgres, to API services, through UI optimisations, and user experiences.

  • Build new clinical document types, from writing and evaluating the prompt to building the editor view and releasing it safely behind a feature flag

  • Improve the speed and cost of document generation by tracing requests, finding bottlenecks, and tuning models, prompts and retry policies without compromising quality

  • Build integrations with practice management systems such as Best Practice and EMIS, and with healthcare standards like FHIR and HL7

  • Investigate production incidents using Sentry, CloudWatch, and Langfuse, and then identify and fix the root cause rather than just the symptoms

  • Independently break down feature work into clear, shippable steps

  • Review your teammates’ code and help keep our engineering standard high

What you’ll bring

  • Strong, production-level TypeScript and modern front-end framework experience, ideally Svelte and SvelteKit

  • Strong Python skills, including data structures, async programming, and building APIs with FastAPI and Pydantic

  • Hands-on experience integrating large language models into products, including prompt engineering, structured output, streaming, and managing latency and cost

  • Solid Postgres and SQL skills, including schema design, indexing and query performance

  • Experience shipping and operating software on AWS, a history with Docker, and good observability and testing practices

  • The breadth and confidence to work across the full stack, and the judgement to know when to lead and when to learn

Nice to have

  • Experience with healthcare integrations such as FHIR, HL7, EMIS or Best Practice

  • Familiarity with Supabase, including row level security and generated types, or with Temporal for durable workflows

  • Experience protecting personal data in text using tools like Presidio, llm-guard or spaCy

  • Experience with rich text editors such as ProseMirror or TinyMCE, or with browser audio capture and real-time streaming

  • A working knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) and front-end performance optimisation

Every hour a clinician spends on paperwork is an hour taken away from patients. The code you write here goes straight into the hands of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, giving them time back and helping them deliver better, safer care. If you want your engineering to have a real, visible impact on people’s health, this is the place to do it.

We’re building a team that reflects the diversity of the people who benefit from our work. We want Lyrebird to be a place where everyone feels safe, supported, and able to thrive. If you’re from an underrepresented background in tech, we strongly encourage you to apply, even if you don’t meet every requirement.
