About UsIAG Defence & National Security (DNS) is part of IAG, a specialist advisory firm supporting complex infrastructure, Defence and national security programs across Australia. Our DNS team works closely with Commonwealth agencies and industry partners to deliver specialist expertise into nationally significant programs. Our success depends on our ability to identify, engage and mobilise highly specialised talent quickly and effectively. IAG is recognised as a Veteran Friendly Employer under the Veteran Employment Program.
The RoleWe're looking for a specialist AI Governance, Assurance and TEVV professional to join a Defence network integration team based in Symonston, ACT. This is a newly established position - reporting directly to the SO1 - created to help build and mature Army's AI governance and assurance capability as AI-enabled systems move closer to real operational deployment.
This role is genuinely specialist and standalone: it's a single "key person" engagement, meaning shared services or multiple contractors covering the deliverables won't be considered, and there's no parent-company support arrangement built into the model - you'd be the dedicated technical authority on AI assurance for this team.
You'll provide independent, evidence-based assessment of AI-enabled systems' performance, security, reliability and operational suitability, supporting both Army-led assurance activities and the review of assessments conducted by industry, DSTG and other organisations. Given the ITAR-sensitive nature of the work, some domestic and occasional international travel may be required to support stakeholder engagement, field trials and coalition exercises.
Key Responsibilities- Develop, maintain and review AI governance and assurance artefacts, including AI Use Cases, System Cards, Model Cards and related documentation
- Review AI-related policies, submissions, technical papers and proposals, providing advice on their implications
- Support the implementation and continuous improvement of AI governance and assurance arrangements
- Analyse complex technical, operational and policy issues, providing evidence-based advice to senior decision-makers
- Support AI assurance and Test, Evaluation, Verification and Validation (TEVV) activities, including assessment of AI-enabled systems, technical evidence, performance claims and risks
- Contribute to the planning, coordination and oversight of evaluation activities undertaken by Defence, industry, DSTG and other organisations
- Act as an informed customer and assurance authority for AI-related activities conducted by third parties
- Translate technical findings into clear, actionable advice, reports and decision-support products for senior stakeholders
- Engage with stakeholders across Defence, industry, academia and government to support AI governance and capability activities
- Current NV1 security clearance (may be required to upgrade to NV2 during the engagement)
- Australian citizenship
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Data Science, Machine Learning, Systems Engineering or another relevant STEM discipline, or equivalent demonstrated professional experience
- Minimum 5 years' experience developing, implementing, managing, assuring, testing, evaluating or governing AI, machine learning or other advanced technology solutions
- Demonstrated experience applying engineering, risk, assurance, operational analysis, or test and evaluation methodologies to complex real-world problems
- Demonstrated ability to review technical information, assess evidence and provide recommendations supporting informed decision-making
- Experience preparing reports, briefs and submissions for senior stakeholders and decision-makers
- Demonstrated experience applying AI governance, assurance, risk management, ethics, privacy or security frameworks to technology-enabled capabilities
- Demonstrated understanding of AI and machine learning systems, including the ability to assess technical documentation, performance claims and risks
- Experience delivering AI, machine learning, data science or advanced analytics solutions within Defence, Defence Industry, DSTG, National Security or Commonwealth Government
- Experience supporting verification, validation, assurance, certification, accreditation, test and evaluation or capability assurance activities
- Experience developing or implementing AI governance, responsible AI, assurance, risk management, compliance or ethical AI frameworks
- Experience acting as a customer representative, technical authority, assurance authority, evaluator or Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) function
$185,000 - $190,000 (incl. Super)
