Location: Telford - 2 days onsite per week
Contract: Up to 12 months
Rate: 75- 79 per hour, Inside IR35
Clearance: BPSS

We are currently seeking an experienced Lead Java Engineer to join a rapidly growing Modernisation Programme within Tax Administration.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a technically strong engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, shaping technical solutions and providing technical leadership across a wider engineering team.

The Role

As a Lead Java Engineer, you will work closely with Architects, QA Leads and Engagement Managers during the Design phase before taking technical ownership through Build and Delivery.

You will be responsible for creating Low-Level Designs (LLDs) for services, building on the wider architectural design. These designs will cover the end-to-end service and provide the foundation for formal impact assessment and backlog creation.

As the programme progresses into Build, you will take a leading technical role in the development and delivery of services, helping the team adopt shared components, engineering best practices and consistent ways of working.

You will also join an established community of Lead Engineers and contribute to the wider Modernisation engineering community.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across Java-based engineering teams.
• Design and develop scalable services and integrations.
• Produce comprehensive Low-Level Designs (LLDs).
• Translate architectural designs into actionable technical solutions.
• Lead technical delivery throughout the Build phase.
• Work collaboratively with Architects, QA Leads and Engagement Managers.
• Drive technical solutions to complex engineering challenges.
• Support and mentor other engineers.
• Promote engineering principles, standards and best practices.
• Utilise shared/common components across the wider Modernisation Programme.
• Ensure high-quality technical delivery across assigned services.

Essential Skills

• Java
• Spring / Spring Boot
• Kubernetes
• Strong experience working as a Lead Engineer / Senior Engineer
• Proven experience producing technical designs and LLDs.
• Strong problem-solving and technical leadership skills.
• Experience working within complex enterprise environments.

Desirable

• React / Front-End development
• Experience with platform integration.
• Experience working within large-scale modernisation programmes.

Contract Details

• Up to 12-month assignment
• 75- 79 per hour
• Inside IR35
• PAYE engagement
• 2 days per week onsite in Telford - minimum
• BPSS Clearance

Please note: Candidates must be able to attend the Telford site at least 2 days per week for the duration of the assignment.
