Assistant Property Controller

Description
We are looking for an Assistant Property Controller to support the accounting and financial reporting activities for a substantial residential real estate portfolio based in New York, New York. This role is ideal for a hands-on accounting specialist with strong attention to detail who can manage monthly reporting with precision while coordinating work across internal partners and an offshore support team. The position offers the opportunity to contribute across core accounting operations, cross-functional initiatives, and portfolio-level financial analysis in a fast-paced property management environment.
Responsibilities:
• Lead the month-end close cycle for a large residential property portfolio, ensuring timely and accurate completion of accounting activities.
• Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements and supporting schedules for multiple properties and consolidated reporting needs.
• Maintain oversight of general ledger activity, including reconciliations, journal entries, and resolution of variances or discrepancies.
• Coordinate and review deliverables completed by the offshore accounting team to uphold accuracy, consistency, and deadlines.
• Partner with asset management, property management, and development teams to address financial questions and support portfolio performance decisions.
• Assist with audit preparation by organizing documentation, responding to requests, and helping ensure compliance with reporting standards.
• Use Yardi to manage property accounting data, reporting workflows, and financial records across the portfolio.
• Contribute to special projects and process-related initiatives that support accounting operations and business priorities.
Requirements
• At least 3 years of accounting experience, with a focus on residential real estate or property management environments.
• Background supporting accounting for high-volume property portfolios, preferably involving more than 5,000 residential units.
• Proficiency with Yardi and strong working knowledge of property management accounting systems.
• Solid experience with month-end close, general ledger maintenance, and financial reporting.
• Familiarity with financial statement audits and the ability to support audit preparation and documentation requests.
• Understanding of residential real estate accounting, with affordable housing experience considered valuable.
• Ability to work independently while coordinating tasks with cross-functional stakeholders and offshore support resources.
