Principal Software Engineer, Payer Portal

Lead backend software design and delivery for athenahealth's Collector product, supporting healthcare revenue cycle workflows such as claims, payments and billing. Guide architectural decisions across legacy and modern services, strengthen engineering practices, mentor engineers, and help teams adopt AI-assisted development tools. The role is hybrid in Boston, Massachusetts.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, development and delivery of backend software in an agile, cross-functional team.
• Make system-level architectural decisions spanning an enterprise monolith and newer platform services.
• Improve production readiness through testing, reliability, observability and operational practices.
• Establish engineering standards, including code review, specification-driven development and test-driven development.
• Partner with product and engineering stakeholders to clarify scope, tradeoffs, risks and delivery decisions.
• Mentor engineers and integrate responsible use of AI coding assistants and agentic development tools.
