J.S. Held is seeking an experienced and motivated Environmental Scientist II to join our Industrial Hygiene & Built Environment practice in Massachusetts. This role offers the opportunity to support a diverse portfolio of projects across the Northeast, including commercial, healthcare, higher education, municipal, and industrial facilities.
The successful candidate will lead and perform environmental assessments, hazardous building material investigations, indoor air quality evaluations, and remediation oversight while partnering closely with industrial hygienists, project managers, and clients. This position is ideal for a consultant who enjoys a balance of fieldwork, technical problem-solving, client interaction, and project coordination.
Job Responsibilities
- Conduct environmental investigations and hazardous building material assessments involving asbestos, lead-based paint, mold, and other environmental concerns.
- Perform air, bulk, wipe, and surface sampling in accordance with federal and state regulations, project specifications, and industry best practices.
- Support and independently execute indoor air quality (IAQ) assessments, moisture intrusion investigations, and building condition evaluations.
- Provide on-site oversight of abatement, remediation, and demolition projects, including final visual inspections and clearance sampling.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, field documentation, and regulatory-compliant project deliverables.
- Coordinate laboratory analysis, review analytical results, and assist in interpreting findings for clients and project teams.
- Ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, EPA, AHERA, Massachusetts DEP, and local regulatory requirements.
- Maintain project schedules, manage multiple assignments simultaneously, and communicate project updates to managers and clients.
- Support proposal efforts, client relationship development, and mentoring of junior staff as experience level permits.
- Participate in health and safety planning and promote a strong safety culture across all project activities.
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Environmental Engineering, Geology, or a related discipline.
- 3+ years of experience in environmental consulting, industrial hygiene, hazardous building materials, or related environmental field services.
- Demonstrated experience conducting asbestos, lead, and mold inspections and sampling.
- Strong understanding of environmental regulations and industry sampling methodologies.
- Experience preparing technical reports and maintaining defensible project documentation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage field assignments independently and travel throughout Massachusetts and the broader Northeast region as needed.
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
Preferred
- Massachusetts Asbestos Inspector certification.
- Massachusetts Asbestos Project Monitor certification.
- Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor and/or Lead Sampling Technician certification.
- NIOSH 582 Microscopy Training.
- OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification.
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) track or interest in pursuing professional certifications.
- Experience supporting healthcare, higher education, life sciences, commercial real estate, or municipal clients.

A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $90,000 - $125,000. Any offered salary range is based on a wide array of factors including but not limited to skillset, experience, training, location, scope of role, management responsibility, etc.
