Job Description

About Us

Epia Neuro is a neural technology company developing intent-driven systems designed to restore function and independence for people living with neurological conditions. Its platform integrates implantable neural interfaces, adaptive algorithms, and assistive devices to translate neural intent into real-world action. The company’s initial focus is stroke-related motor impairment, with expansion in cognitive decline and other neurological disorders, focusing on long-term solutions for the growing aging population.

The Role

We’re looking for a Staff Electrical Systems Engineer who wants to play a critical role in architecting and delivering next-generation implantable and wearable medical systems.

This role sits at the intersection of hardware, firmware, and system integration, and is responsible for translating early-stage concepts into robust, production-ready Class III medical devices.

You will report to the Director of Hardware Engineering (or equivalent) and drive system-level design decisions across electrical architecture, embedded systems, and validation strategy.

Location

This role is based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and expected to work on site from our Alameda Headquarters 5 days a week.

What You’ll Do

System Architecture & Design

  • Define and architect end-to-end electrical systems for implantable and external medical devices.

  • Translate product requirements into system specifications, including power, signal integrity, communication, and safety constraints.

  • Drive design trade-offs across performance, power consumption, reliability, and manufacturability.

Hardware Development

  • Design and develop PCBAs, including schematic capture, layout guidance, and component selection.

  • Lead development of analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits, including MCU-based systems and communication interfaces.

  • Support rapid prototyping and iteration cycles.

Embedded Systems & Firmware

  • Develop embedded firmware in C/C++ to enable hardware functionality and system integration.

  • Collaborate with firmware/software teams to debug and optimize system performance.

  • Build reusable libraries and system-level abstractions.

Integration, Testing & Validation

  • Define and execute system-level verification and validation strategies.

  • Debug complex hardware/firmware interactions across subsystems.

  • Partner with test engineering to develop automated validation platforms.

Productization & Compliance

  • Work with cross-functional teams to transition prototypes into production-ready medical devices.

  • Ensure designs meet regulatory and safety requirements (e.g., Class III medical device standards).

  • Support risk analysis and design verification processes.

Documentation & Collaboration

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation including schematics, BOMs, test plans, and design history.

  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, software, and manufacturing teams.

  • Communicate technical decisions clearly across engineering and leadership teams.

Qualifications

  • Experience owning electrical architecture for a complex product that shipped, from concept through verification and production handoff

  • Strong analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design, including MCU-based systems, power architecture, and communication interfaces

  • Hands-on PCBA development: schematic capture, component selection, and close work with layout (layout guidance, signal and power integrity reviews)

  • Embedded firmware development in C/C++ to bring up, integrate, and debug hardware; Python for test automation and data analysis

  • Proven ability to debug complex hardware/firmware interactions across subsystems using standard lab equipment (scopes, logic analyzers, spectrum/network analyzers)

  • Experience developing products under a regulated design process (medical device design controls, or similar rigor in aerospace, automotive safety, or defense), including requirements traceability, design verification, and risk analysis

  • Ability to drive technical decisions across mechanical, firmware, software, test, and manufacturing teams, and to explain trade-offs clearly to leadership

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, plus 8+ years of hands-on electrical hardware development (or a Master's/PhD plus 6+ years)

Nice To Have

  • Development experience with Class II/III medical devices, ideally active implantables

  • Familiarity with relevant standards such as IEC 60601-1, ISO 14708, ISO 14971, and IEC 62304

  • Ultra-low-power design for battery-powered or wirelessly powered systems (e.g., inductive power, BLE or other low-power radios)

  • Experience with biopotential or neural signal acquisition front-ends, low-noise analog design, or stimulation circuitry

  • Design for manufacturability and experience scaling from prototype to contract manufacturer builds

  • Experience building automated test and validation systems

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in lab environments, including bench testing and hardware debugging

  • Occasional lifting of lab equipment and hardware prototypes

How We Work

  • We are intentional. We prioritize and are thoughtful about how we use others’ time.

  • We care for others. We prioritize safety both for patients and one another.

  • We own outcomes, not just tasks. Our work demands the highest standards because it impacts real patients and real lives.

  • Humility is a strength. We are honest about what we know and what we don’t know. Getting it right matters more than being right.

Benefits

Full-time employees are eligible for the following benefits listed below.

  • Competitive base salary with equity

  • 100% of healthcare coverage for you and your dependents

  • Generous vacation policy

  • Paid parental leave

  • Work from our beautiful waterfront office in Alameda, CA, with access to collaborative spaces and labs.
