Job Description

Digital Director
Voting Rights Lab
Location: Remote, U.S.-based
Classification: Full-time, Exempt
Reporting to: Managing Director, Communications
Managing: N/A
Travel: Occasional, up to 10% of the time

Role Overview
Voting Rights Lab, a national nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization, and its 501(c)(4) affiliate are fighting the state-level battles that will shape elections in 2026, 2028, and for decades to come. In 2025 alone, we stopped a wave of proof-of-citizenship mandates in red and purple states from Texas to Michigan and produced the first-ever map of election law vulnerabilities — showing where losing candidates can exploit state laws to challenge legitimate results. Grounded in deep state-level relationships and cross-ideological credibility, we anticipate threats and deliver solutions where democracy is most at risk.

As the Digital Director, you will develop and manage the organization’s growing online presence, including websites, social media platforms, digital products, and paid and organic digital campaigns. You will also play a core role in Voting Rights Lab’s work to build a firewall around our elections by translating deep audience research into innovative paid and organic content strategies. Finally, you will shape the organization’s social and online editorial strategy and help the organization build the next iteration of digital research products relied on by national and state media and the pro-democracy movement.

This position is housed within the Communications Department. You will bring exceptional strategic thinking, writing, and editorial skills, a strong understanding of digital platforms and trends, and the ability to collaborate with various stakeholders to produce engaging digital content in a fast-paced environment.
Voting Rights Lab is a fully remote organization, and this position can be based anywhere in the United States. We offer a collaborative and innovative work environment, competitive compensation, and opportunities for professional advancement.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Develop and direct digital strategy and campaigns

  • Create and manage the organization’s digital strategy to advance our advocacy, policy, and narrative goals.
  • Ideate, construct, and deploy compelling organic digital campaigns and strategies that enhance public awareness, shape public opinion about our issues, and/or persuade decision-makers to take action. This includes developing and curating a network of online content creators and validators.
  • Direct sophisticated paid digital media campaigns for persuasion, advocacy, brand visibility, and/or public education.
  • Project manage, track, and report on the results of digital campaigns and strategies; develop benchmarks to measure success; and share metrics with the team. Utilize findings for continuous improvement.
  • Support digital programs, strategy, and tactics for outside validators, coalition partners, and key messengers in support of campaign goals.
  • Support and advise digital organizing efforts, strategies, and tools for grassroots volunteers and partner organizations.

Direct and grow the organization’s online footprint

  • Direct the development and upkeep of the organization’s digital properties and products, including external websites, social media channels, the Election Risk Heat Map, and the Election Policy Tracker.
  • Add and update engaging content to our digital properties, identify opportunities to expand our digital footprint, collaborate with development vendors and internal stakeholders, and use site analytics to meet goals and implement optimizations.
  • Develop and direct a social media strategy to expand the organization’s online visibility and impact.

Management and operations

  • Manage a team of consultants focused on digital products, paid media campaigns, and digital support.
  • Manage staff or other projects as assigned.
  • Provide internal communications and digital support as assigned.
  • Participate in organizational activities, events, and learning.
  • Support an environment of cross-team collaboration and communication.
  • Manage regular personal administration, including timely submission of receipts, reimbursement requests, travel planning, scheduling/calendaring, etc.

Required Experience:

  • A minimum of six years of relevant experience in digital communications with a proven track record of managing digital strategy, campaign leadership, and direct ownership of complex digital products and project management. Relevant experience should include:
    • Developing and directing digital strategy tied to concrete advocacy, persuasion, public-education, policy, or narrative objectives
    • Experience determining campaign audiences, channels, content/creative approach, development strategy, and success measures
    • Experience managing sophisticated paid media and digital advertising campaigns for persuasion, advocacy, and visibility. This includes managing creative and paid media vendors, self-serve social platforms (such as Facebook Ads Manager), and innovative digital tools/platforms to reach target audiences
    • In-depth knowledge of digital trends, social media platforms, content marketing, and best practices in SEO and web accessibility
    • Skilled in using audience research, data, testing, and performance metrics to drive strategy
    • Experience managing a multi-step, time-sensitive content production and review process across diverse teams and departments.
  • Exceptional digital editorial/narrative judgment in a complex, fast-moving, high-stakes advocacy/policy environment
  • Proven communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail, organized, and strong project management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, fully remote, tech-forward work environment and manage competing priorities
