Agentic AI Engineer – Java/Kotlin

We're working with a major UK organisation investing significantly in AI and modern engineering, and we're looking for an experienced Agentic AI Engineer to join a highly capable technology function.

This isn't simply an LLM integration role. You'll work at the intersection of Agentic AI, Software Engineering, Architecture and Data, partnering directly with business stakeholders to identify complex operational problems and build agentic solutions that deliver genuine business value.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving ambiguous problems, can move comfortably from discovery and rapid prototyping into robust software engineering, and wants to help shape how Agentic AI is applied within a large-scale organisation.

What you'll be doing

• Work directly with business stakeholders to understand complex and sometimes poorly defined operational challenges.
• Identify opportunities where Agentic AI and automation can materially improve existing business processes.
• Design, prototype and implement agentic systems, rapidly iterating solutions in collaboration with end users.
• Apply systems thinking and data analysis to identify root causes, friction points and opportunities for improvement.
• Use strong software engineering and architecture principles to take ideas beyond proof-of-concept.
• Explore short-term solutions capable of delivering immediate business value while considering longer-term scalability.
• Help shape technical architecture and product roadmaps based on insights gained from real-world business problems.
• Communicate complex technical ideas clearly and influence both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What we're looking for

You'll need strong hands-on software engineering credentials combined with genuine experience building agentic systems.

Essential experience

• Strong commercial software engineering experience within complex environments.
• Proven hands-on development experience with Java and/or Kotlin, particularly building reliable backend services or modern applications.
• Practical experience of Agentic Engineering, including agentic coding environments and automated engineering workflows.
• Experience building and implementing agentic systems using agent orchestration and frameworks.
• Advanced prompt and context engineering experience.
• Understanding of state and memory management within agentic architectures.
• Experience implementing deterministic guardrails and evaluations (Evals).
• Experience integrating agents with external tools and APIs.
• Knowledge of emerging agentic protocols, including MCP, A2A and UCP.
• Experience working with cloud-based data platforms. Snowflake experience would be particularly relevant.
• Experience deploying and operating solutions within cloud environments. GCP exposure would be advantageous.
• Strong analytical skills, with the ability to translate raw data into meaningful and actionable insights.
• Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to question assumptions and work with stakeholders to identify the root cause of problems.

Desirable experience

• Data science experience, particularly using data to identify meaningful patterns and actionable insights.
• Experience applying systems-thinking techniques to complex and dynamic business problems.

Location & package

Salary: Up to £115,000, depending on experience
