Job Description

About the role

The Senior Project Engineer leads the end-to-end delivery of complex Transmission & Substation (T&S) capital projects across the 60 kV, 115 kV, 230 kV, and 500 kV systems — greenfield substations, expansions, bus reconfigurations, equipment replacements, and reliability upgrades. This is a senior-level role that requires mastery of journey-level engineering duties and the ability to drive projects with only general direction.

The focus is execution: translating engineering designs into delivered, energized assets on scope, on schedule, and on budget, while coordinating the many disciplines, contractors, and stakeholders a substation project touches. The position is hybrid, combining a remote office with an assigned PG&E work location and periodic travel to project sites.

Key responsibilities

Lead end-to-end delivery of complex substation and transmission projects (60 kV–500 kV) from initiation and planning through execution, commissioning, and closeout.

Develop and manage project scope, schedule, and cost estimates; prepare and submit project funding requests; and track and forecast budget throughout the job.

Prepare bid packages and lead the technical evaluation of contractor and vendor proposals.

Coordinate cross-functionally with design, system protection, telecom, land, permitting, environmental, and operations teams to keep projects aligned and on track.

Oversee preconstruction meetings, coordinate factory acceptance testing (FAT), and manage RFIs, change orders, and invoicing.

Provide engineering support during construction, commissioning, and energization, resolving field issues as they arise.

Interpret and apply industry codes and PG&E standards, ensuring conformance with NERC, WECC, and CAISO requirements, CPUC GO 95/128, the NESC, and IEEE/ANSI standards.

Manage relationships with contractors, vendors, and local public agencies, and serve as a single point of contact on project issues.

Provide technical direction and mentorship to associate and journey-level engineers.

Champion safety in every project decision and foster a safe working environment for crews and contractors.

Required qualifications

Education: BS in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent).

Experience: 8+ years of cumulative electrical engineering experience, including substantial substation and/or transmission project delivery.

Licensure: Active California PE (Electrical), or ability to obtain by comity within an agreed timeframe.

Project management: Hands-on command of the full project lifecycle — initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, and closeout.

Technical: Working knowledge of substation design/construction and T&S equipment across 60 kV–500 kV.

Commercial: Experience with estimating, scheduling, bid packages, and contractor/vendor management.

Communication: Strong written/verbal skills; able to deliver presentations and lead meetings.

Other: Valid California driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites.

Preferred qualifications

MS in Electrical Engineering, or PMP / formal project-management certification.

Direct experience with PG&E (or comparable IOU) standards and the PG&E Transmission Interconnection Handbook.

Experience interconnecting renewables, battery storage (BESS), and inverter-based resources.

Proficiency with Primavera P6 or MS Project for scheduling.

Experience across both greenfield and brownfield substation projects.
