Member of Technical Staff - Backend & Infrastructure

Janitor is building AI interactive entertainment for millions of people. Every day, our users create characters, worlds, stories, and relationships with AI. We’re looking for an engineer who wants to build the systems behind that experience, from product features to the infrastructure that keeps them running.

We run more of our own infrastructure than most companies our size, and we’re investing further in it. You’ll help decide what we build, how we run it, and where to simplify.

What you’ll work on

• Build backend services and product features connected to our AI stack.

• Make the platform faster and more efficient. Find bottlenecks across APIs, database queries, caching, background jobs, and real-time connections.

• Own reliability in production. Investigate failures, fix their causes, and improve how we deploy, monitor, and recover.

• Help our infrastructure scale. Make practical decisions about architecture and capacity as usage grows.

Infra problems here rarely look like infra problems. They show up as product bugs, a slow page, a delayed job, a websocket reconnect, a cache path that worked until it did not. The job is to understand the system from the user experience down to the machine, then make it better.

You might be a good fit if

• You have at least four years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial work on backend systems or infrastructure.

• You can follow a problem across services and layers, including parts of the stack you haven’t worked with before.

• You make thoughtful tradeoffs and prefer systems that are straightforward to understand and operate.

• You can take an unclear problem, figure out what matters, and carry a solution through to production.

We strongly prefer experience with TypeScript/Node.js, NestJS, PostgreSQL, Redis, and Kubernetes. You don’t need to have used every tool, but we want to see evidence that you’ve built and operated substantial systems. Experience with distributed systems or GPU infrastructure is a plus.
