JOB DESCRIPTION
This job opening is being used to fill current and future vacant positions in this classification at various shifts, locations, and assigned days off.
ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made based on fitness and ability, with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide, and external candidates, respectively.
The Maintenance Trainee, Rail Car participates in the WMATA Technical Skills Program (TSP) consisting of developmental training for a period of two (2) years in Rail Car Maintenance (CMNT). The trainee must satisfactorily progress thru each of four (4) training Levels consisting of both classroom and on the job training/experience as contemplated in the TSP. Upon graduation the trainee will be placed into a job assignment as a Mechanic, grade C within the CMNT, performing the associated responsibilities under the close supervision of both management staff, as well as, TSP "Mentor" mechanics assigned to provide on the job training (OJT) in the CMNT disciplines throughout the training period.

Principal Job Duties
- Attends formal training classes related to basic, intermediate and advanced rapid transit rail car vehicle maintenance. Gains familiarity with and develops skills in the maintenance, inspection, repair, removal, installation, troubleshooting, testing and calibration of WMATA rail cars vehicles and equipment.
- Under the direct oversight of assigned journey level mechanics, uses hand tools, power tools and test equipment to inspect, diagnose and repair WMATA rail car vehicle vehicles and equipment malfunctions in accordance with safety and maintenance procedures and practices.
- Completes all documentation and reports associated with the operation and maintenance of WMATA rail car vehicles and any required training documentation.
- Provides assistance to supervisors and mechanical staff in emergencies by securing or safeguarding WMATA equipment, fire/life/safety, snow emergencies, etc. according to established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.

- Maintains and promotes awareness and accountability with safety policies and procedures while performing job functions. Promotes a positive safety culture and encourages reporting of safety concerns consistent with our Agency Safety Plan, other regulatory requirements within the Safety Management System and just culture principles.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Knowledge
- Knowledge of mechanical, electrical or electronic theory and application.
Skills
- Skilled in the use of basic electrical, mechanical or electronic tools in performing job tasks.
- Skilled in using reading comprehension, basic arithmetic and trade skills in the performance of job tasks.
Abilities
- Ability to successfully complete all required formal, safety and on the job training, performing assigned duties in compliance with safety and maintenance rules and procedures.
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively; interact courteously and respectably with others and work with others to complete assigned tasks.
- Ability to work various hours, days, shifts and locations.
- Ability to observe and mimic job tasks as demonstrated and assigned
Machine, Tools, Equipment, Software, Hardware Required
- Hand tools such as Wrench's, Sockets, Pliers, Screwdrivers
- Measuring devices such as gauges, torque wrenches, calipers, rulers
- Test equipment such as Multi Meters, Temperature Probes, Portable Test Units (PTU'S)
Supervisory Responsibility
Not responsible for supervising others.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education
- High School Diploma with two (2) years of Vocational Training in Electrical, Mechanical or Electronics
- In lieu of Vocational Training one (1) year of related work experience in the electrical, mechanical or electronics field may be considered Upon the achievement of 1,000 hours at a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.
Minimum Experience
- With Vocational Training in Electrical, Mechanical or Electronics no prior work experience is required
Minimum Certification/Licensure
- Valid Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree, or vocational or technical school degree in in Electrical, Mechanical or Electronics
