Position Overview

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the design, analysis, and continuous improvement of components and systems used on heavy machinery. This role works closely with our paint and coatings team, contributing engineering expertise on surface finishing, coating durability, and paint application processes alongside the technicians who apply paint to the machines. This is an onsite position based in East Peoria, IL.

Key Contributions & Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze, and optimize mechanical components and systems for heavy machinery, from concept through production.
  • Partner with the paint and coatings team to evaluate and improve surface finishing, coating durability, and application processes.
  • Collaborate directly with paint technicians to troubleshoot application issues and translate findings into design or process improvements.
  • Select materials, coatings, and surface treatments that meet performance, durability, and corrosion-resistance requirements.
  • Create and maintain engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation using CAD software.
  • Conduct root cause analysis on coating and finish-related defects, and implement corrective actions.
  • Participate in design reviews, testing, and validation of components to ensure compliance with engineering and quality standards.
  • Support manufacturability improvements that reduce cost, cycle time, and rework related to paint and finishing operations.
  • Work cross-functionally with manufacturing, quality, and supplier partners to resolve design and process issues.

Team Structure & Work Environment

This is a full-time, onsite role based in East Peoria, IL. The Mechanical Engineer will be embedded within an engineering team that works in close partnership with the paint and coatings group, including both engineering specialists and the technicians who apply paint to heavy machinery and components on the shop floor. The role requires regular time on the production floor alongside the paint team to observe processes, gather data, and validate improvements, in addition to time spent on design and analysis work.

Candidate Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline with 3-5 years of experience.
  • Prior experience designing components or systems for heavy machinery or industrial equipment preferred.
  • Experience or working knowledge of paint coatings, surface finishing, or corrosion-protection processes strongly preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, or similar) for 3D modeling and drawing creation.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and engineering drawing standards.
  • Familiarity with paint coating systems, surface preparation methods, and finishing specifications.
  • Understanding of material properties and their interaction with coatings and finishing processes.
  • Ability to apply root cause analysis and problem-solving methodologies to design and process issues.

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work closely with both engineers and shop-floor technicians.
  • Collaborative mindset and comfort working cross-functionally across engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
