Position: Industrial Engineer Warehouse Layout Optimization
Location: Remote with travel to Detroit, MI
Duration: 4 Weeks (Possible extension)
Travel: Must be available to work at the client site in Detroit for approximately 1 2 weeks. Travel expenses will be covered by the project.

Job Description

We are looking for a senior Industrial Engineer / Automotive Logistics SME with strong experience in warehouse layout optimization, material flow design, automotive logistics, and storage/capacity planning.

The consultant will support a rapid assessment of future-state automotive logistics operations, storage requirements, inventory placement, and facility/LOC capacity constraints associated with new program introductions and facility changes.

You will work closely with Operations, Industrial Engineering, Planning, and other teams to evaluate current assumptions, identify capacity and material-flow risks, and provide practical recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess whether future automotive production programs can be accommodated within existing facility constraints.
  • Evaluate warehouse footprint, storage capacity, and space utilization.
  • Analyze inventory and material storage requirements.
  • Develop and evaluate inventory placement strategies.
  • Assess the impact of throughput growth, new programs, and facility changes.
  • Support material-flow and logistics scenario development.
  • Evaluate sequencing, kitting, line-side replenishment, and JIT/JIS operations.
  • Recommend warehouse layout and material-flow improvements.
  • Support material-handling system selection and justification.
  • Identify opportunities for warehouse automation, including AMRs, AGVs, ASRS, and goods-to-person systems.
  • Quickly identify operational risks and provide practical recommendations to support planning decisions.

Required Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in automotive logistics, in-plant logistics, warehousing, industrial engineering, or material-flow design.
  • Strong experience supporting Automotive OEMs and/or Tier-1 suppliers.
  • Experience with supplier parks and/or 3PL-operated automotive warehouse/logistics environments.
  • Hands-on experience with sequencing, kitting, line-side replenishment, and JIT/JIS manufacturing environments.
  • Experience evaluating:
    • Warehouse footprint requirements
    • Space utilization
    • Material-flow strategies
    • Inventory placement
    • Storage and capacity requirements
  • Ability to quickly assess and challenge existing operational assumptions.

Preferred Experience

  • Greenfield warehouse or logistics facility design.
  • Facility expansion, footprint reduction, or logistics transformation projects.
  • Simulation/modeling experience.
  • Warehouse automation and material-handling systems including AMRs, AGVs, ASRS, conveyors, and goods-to-person solutions.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Minimum 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Must be willing and able to travel to Detroit, MI for approximately 1 2 weeks during the project.
  • Travel expenses will be paid by the project.
