Job Description

Substation Safety Instructor
Location: Williamsport, MD
Contract: 16-month W2 contract
Pay: $30-$33/hr + optional medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) match
Position Summary
This role focuses on teaching electrical systems, safety procedures, equipment operation, and field work practices while helping employees develop the skills needed for success in the utility industry.
Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver classroom and field training on substation operations, electrical theory, safety, maintenance, construction, and troubleshooting.
  • Teach OSHA, NESC, NEC, and company safety standards.
  • Demonstrate proper use of tools, equipment, climbing techniques, and rigging procedures.
  • Evaluate trainee performance through written tests, practical demonstrations, and field observations.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and feedback to support employee development.
  • Maintain training records, lesson plans, and curriculum updates.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and professional work environment.
  • Coordinate training schedules with management and other instructors.
  • Stay current on utility industry tools, equipment, and best practices.
  • Assist with workforce development projects and storm restoration efforts as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • 4 to 7 years of journeyman-level experience as a Substation Electrician.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of transmission and distribution systems, electrical construction, and safety practices.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, NESC, NEC, and NFPA 70E standards.
  • Ability to climb structures, work at heights, and operate bucket trucks or aerial lifts.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Basic Microsoft Office and computer skills.
  • Valid Class A CDL or ability to obtain one.
  • Previous experience training, mentoring, or leading crews is preferred.
  • Instructional or adult education certifications are a plus.
Working Conditions
  • Combination of classroom, training yard, and field environments.
  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, and outdoor work.
  • Travel up to 25%, with occasional travel up to 50% to remote locations.
