Job Description

We partner with PwC to support their contingent recruitment processes. Acting as an extension of their recruitment teams, we connect them with skilled interim and temporary professionals, fostering workplaces where everyone can contribute and succeed.

PwC is a hugely diverse business, bound by our global purpose - to build trust in society and solve important problems. Our greatest opportunity to deliver our purpose is through meaningful work that makes a difference to our clients and society. We have a culture of high performance built on exceptional quality, ethical and professional standards. We lead by example. Our standards for quality - and care - are high. And together we surpass them. We believe we can make the biggest impact when leading with our purpose, values and PwC Professional behaviours in every interaction.

Job description - the role

On behalf of PwC, we are looking for a Technical Accountant for an initial 6 Month contract based in Birmingham, on a hybrid working pattern of 3 days on site and 2 from home, on a day rate engagement.

Join us as a Technical Accountant

The Group Finance team requires an experienced technical accounting professional to provide hands-on support through a demanding statutory reporting and audit period. The role will focus on statutory reporting, predominantly for UK group entities, support for Group reporting, technical accounting analysis and the resolution of audit matters.

The successful candidate will take ownership of defined workstreams with limited supervision and work directly with senior finance stakeholders, entity finance teams and external auditors. This is a delivery-focused assignment rather than a high-level advisory or people-management role.

What you'll do:

  • Support the preparation, review and delivery of statutory accounts and related reporting schedules, predominantly for UK group entities.
  • Support the Group reporting process, including the quality and consistency of accounting treatments, disclosures and supporting evidence across relevant entities.
  • Research and analyse complex or judgemental accounting matters under IFRS and applicable UK GAAP, including differences between Group reporting and legal-entity accounting frameworks.
  • Prepare high-quality technical accounting memoranda and position papers that define the issue, identify the applicable requirements, evaluate reasonable alternatives, address contrary evidence and document a clear, supportable conclusion.
  • Support management in preparing significant judgement and estimate papers, accounting policy documentation, financial statement disclosures and papers for senior management or the Audit Committee.
  • Support the Group Finance team in coordinating the Group and statutory audits, resolving technical accounting matters and delivering complete, accurate and timely audit evidence.
  • Manage technical audit queries through to resolution, including coordinating information from finance teams, maintaining clear actions and documenting changes to analysis or conclusions.
  • Review statutory reporting outputs and supporting working papers for completeness, internal consistency, technical compliance and audit readiness.
  • Identify gaps in accounting analysis, source evidence, controls or documentation and work pragmatically with stakeholders to remediate them.
  • Manage competing priorities and reporting deadlines, provide clear progress updates and escalate technical issues, dependencies and delivery risks promptly.

The skills you'll need:

  • ACA, ACCA, ICAS or an equivalent recognised professional accountancy qualification.
  • Strong and current technical accounting knowledge across IFRS and UK GAAP, including practical experience of statutory accounts prepared under FRS 101 and/or FRS 102.
  • Demonstrable experience personally drafting technical accounting papers on complex or judgemental matters and supporting them through management review and external audit challenge.
  • Significant experience in technical accounting, external audit, accounting advisory, statutory reporting, Group reporting or a closely related role.
  • Experience within a listed, multinational or comparably complex group involving multiple legal entities, business units or territories and a substantial external audit process.
  • Practical experience preparing or reviewing statutory accounts, disclosures, significant judgement papers, audit evidence and responses to auditor queries.
  • Ability to distinguish Group IFRS requirements from the framework applied by an individual legal entity and to resolve or document resulting differences.
  • Excellent written communication, analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to explain technical conclusions clearly to finance and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of defined workstreams and deliver high-quality outputs to demanding deadlines.

At PwC we want every individual to feel valued, respected and empowered to contribute fully. Creating an environment where everyone belongs and thrives unlocks greater innovation, productivity and deeper engagement.
