Job Description

Senior Design Electrical Engineer

Austin, TX | Full Time | On Site

Ashton North is conducting a confidential search for a Senior Design Electrical Engineer to join a growing product development and engineering organization in Austin.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who wants to design, build, test, troubleshoot, and help launch real products. Approximately 80 to 90 percent of the position will be focused on new product development and R&D.

We are looking for a well-rounded electrical engineer who can work across motors, PCB/PCA design, electronics, embedded controls, power systems, communications hardware, testing, and supplier development. This is not a narrowly specialized role. You will have significant ownership and visibility throughout the product development lifecycle.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead electrical design and development of new electromechanical products and motor systems

  • Design, build, test, and troubleshoot prototypes and benchtop systems

  • Work with small DC and tubular motors, motor controllers, gearboxes, PCB/PCA assemblies, batteries, sensors, and power systems

  • Design and troubleshoot analog, digital, mixed signal, and microcontroller based electronics

  • Support embedded controls and firmware associated with motor and hardware operation

  • Work with technologies such as Ethernet, PoE, RS-485, RF, Zigbee, Matter, and other wired or wireless protocols

  • Develop specifications, validation plans, testing requirements, and supplier acceptance criteria

  • Work directly with domestic and international suppliers and contract manufacturers

  • Support products from initial concept through prototype, validation, production launch, and continuous improvement

  • Partner across Mechanical Engineering, Software, Manufacturing, Quality, Procurement, and external engineering partners

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor''s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline

  • Typically 7+ years of hands-on electrical or electronic product development experience

  • Strong experience with motors, motor controls, electromechanical products, or similar hardware

  • Hands-on PCB/PCA design, development, bring-up, and troubleshooting experience

  • Strong knowledge of analog, digital, mixed signal, microcontroller, and low voltage power systems

  • Experience with embedded controls or hardware focused firmware

  • Strong hands-on laboratory, testing, soldering, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis skills

  • Experience taking products from concept through development, validation, and production

  • Ability to work independently and own significant portions of product development

  • Strong communication skills and experience working with suppliers or contract manufacturers

Experience That Could Translate Well

We are open to engineers from a variety of industries. Particularly relevant backgrounds could include power tools, medical devices, robotics, industrial automation, smart home or IoT products, consumer electronics, motion control, battery powered products, and other electromechanical environments.

Experience with small DC motors, lithium batteries, Zigbee or Matter, PoE, Altium Designer, embedded systems, or international manufacturing partners would be especially valuable.

Who Will Thrive in This Role

This opportunity is best suited for an engineer who likes to be close to the product and enjoys wearing multiple technical hats.

We are looking for someone who can say, “I designed it, I built it, I tested it, I figured out what went wrong, and I helped get it into production.”

If you enjoy that kind of ownership, we would like to talk with you.
