Job description
About Oxford Nanopore Technologies
Our goal is to bring the widest benefits to society by enabling the analysis of anything, by anyone, anywhere.
Oxford Nanopore Technologies has developed a new generation of nanopore-based sensing technology that delivers faster, information-rich, accessible and affordable molecular analysis. Our technology is transforming the way researchers analyse DNA and RNA, with applications expanding into proteins and other biomolecules.
Used in more than 125 countries worldwide, our technology is helping scientists better understand human health and disease, including cancer, while advancing research across plants, animals, bacteria, viruses and entire ecosystems.
The Role
We are seeking a highly motivated Scientist to join our research team, focusing on RNA biology and sequencing technology development. This role is ideal for a scientist with strong laboratory experience who enjoys developing innovative methodologies, solving complex biological challenges and working within a collaborative, fast-paced research environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare DNA and RNA sequencing libraries using established and novel chemistries.
- Develop, optimise and troubleshoot molecular biology protocols, including nanopore sequencing workflows.
- Design, plan and independently deliver research projects from experimental conception through to data generation and evaluation.
- Perform preliminary data analysis and visualisation using appropriate bioinformatics tools.
- Maintain accurate experimental records and produce clear protocols, technical reports and project updates.
- Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams across Oxford Nanopore.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior colleagues and interns.
Keep up to date with developments in sequencing technology, molecular biology and RNA research.
Essential Skills and Experience
- PhD, or equivalent research experience, in RNA Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology or a related discipline.
- Strong practical experience in RNA molecular biology, including RNA purification, enzymatic manipulation and RNA integrity assessment.
- Excellent understanding of RNA stability, degradation, secondary structure and enzymology.
- Proven ability to independently design, optimise and troubleshoot complex experiments.
- Familiarity with, or willingness to develop proficiency in, Python, Bash or command-line bioinformatics tools.
- Strong analytical, organisational and communication skills.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Experience with long-read transcriptomics, ideally Oxford Nanopore direct RNA sequencing.
- Experience working with synthetic, chemically modified or therapeutic RNA molecules, including RNA modification and end chemistry.
- Experience developing RNA manipulation, capture or library preparation methods.
- Knowledge of RNA structure, interactions and transcriptomic analysis.
- Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and data visualisation methods.
- Understanding of functional genomics, nucleotide modifications and genome regulation.
Why Join Us?
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of cutting-edge sequencing technologies that are transforming biological research and healthcare worldwide. You will work alongside leading scientists in a collaborative environment where innovation, curiosity and scientific excellence are encouraged.
