Job description

Job Description: Our client is seeking a Substation Engineer to join their growing engineering team in Salisbury, MD. This position is ideal for an engineer experienced in high-voltage (HV) and extra-high-voltage (EHV) substation physical and electrical design. The successful candidate will work closely with project managers, physical/structural engineers, relay protection teams, and utility clients to develop innovative, utility-grade designs from initial concept through construction and commissioning.

  • Lead structural engineering design and analysis for high-voltage (HV) and extra-high-voltage (EHV) utility substations and switchyards.
  • Design structural steel supports and frameworks for electrical substation equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, dead-end structures, disconnect switches, bus supports, and lightning masts.
  • Perform structural foundation designs, including drilled piers/caissons, spread footings, transformer pads, oil containment pits, and blast/fire separation walls. Execute structural calculations for wind loads, seismic conditions, ice accumulation, and dynamic short-circuit / fault forces in accordance with ASCE 7, ASCE 113, and IEEE 605 standards.
  • Coordinate closely with electrical substation engineers to ensure physical designs maintain required phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground electrical clearances.
  • Prepare, review, and stamp detailed structural drawings, construction specifications, foundation plans, and bill of materials (BOM).
  • Conduct site investigations, existing substation condition assessments, and structural walk-downs for expansion and retrofit projects.
  • Review steel fabricator shop drawings, anchor bolt layouts, foundation submittals, and respond to contractor RFIs during construction.
  • Ensure all structural designs comply with NESC, AISC, ACI, ASCE, and utility client engineering standards.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable building codes.
  • Experience preparing construction documents for commercial or institutional projects.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license, or the ability to obtain licensure.
  • Experience with healthcare, municipal, or industrial facility design.
