About the Role:
As our Assistant Director of Engineering, you will support the Director of Engineering in overseeing the day-to-day operations, maintenance, and upkeep of the hotel’s building, equipment, systems, and facilities. You will play a key role in ensuring the property operates safely, efficiently, and consistently while maintaining the high standards expected at M Social Sunnyvale.
This role is ideal for an experienced engineering professional with strong leadership skills, technical knowledge, and a hands-on approach to hotel maintenance. You will work closely with Engineering, Housekeeping, Front Office, Food & Beverage, Security, and other hotel departments to quickly address maintenance needs and support an exceptional guest experience.

You will play a key role in maintaining a safe, comfortable, and well-functioning hotel environment for both guests and team members. Your leadership, technical expertise, and attention to detail will contribute to the reliability of hotel systems, preventative maintenance efforts, operational efficiency, and overall guest satisfaction.
What You'll Be Doing
Engineering Operations
- Support the Director of Engineering in overseeing the daily operations of the Engineering Department
- Assist with the maintenance and operation of the hotel’s building systems, equipment, and facilities
- Conduct regular inspections of guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house areas, and mechanical spaces
- Respond to maintenance requests and ensure work orders are completed accurately and in a timely manner
- Prioritize urgent maintenance issues and coordinate appropriate response
- Assist with troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and other building systems
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and equipment conditions
- Support the Engineering Department in maintaining a clean, organized, and professional work environment
Preventative Maintenance
- Assist in developing and maintaining preventative maintenance schedules for hotel equipment and systems
- Ensure routine inspections and preventative maintenance tasks are completed according to established schedules
- Identify potential equipment or facility issues before they impact guests or hotel operations
- Monitor the condition and performance of mechanical equipment and building systems
- Recommend repairs, replacements, or improvements when necessary
- Assist with maintaining equipment manuals, maintenance records, and service documentation
Team Leadership & Development
- Assist in supervising, training, and developing Engineering team members
- Provide direction and support to Engineering staff during daily operations
- Assign and prioritize work orders based on operational needs
- Monitor the quality and completion of work performed by Engineering team members
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and service-focused department
- Support scheduling and staffing needs within the Engineering Department
- Lead by example and promote a positive team environment
Guest & Hotel Support
- Respond promptly to guest and operational maintenance requests
- Work closely with Front Office and other departments to address guest room and public area concerns
- Communicate maintenance-related issues and updates to hotel leadership
- Assist with resolving guest concerns related to room conditions, temperature, plumbing, electrical systems, and other facility issues
- Support hotel operations during high-volume periods, emergencies, and special events
- Maintain a strong focus on guest comfort, safety, and overall experience
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure Engineering operations follow all applicable safety regulations, company policies, and hotel procedures
- Conduct and document required safety inspections and maintenance checks
- Identify and report potential safety hazards promptly
- Support compliance with fire and life safety requirements
- Assist with emergency response procedures and building-related emergencies
- Ensure proper use, storage, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and chemicals
- Maintain compliance with applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations
- Coordinate with outside contractors and service providers when specialized repairs or inspections are required
Energy & Facility Management
- Monitor hotel utility systems and identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency
- Assist with monitoring HVAC, electrical, plumbing, lighting, water, and other building systems
- Support initiatives designed to reduce energy consumption and operating costs
- Help maintain efficient operation of hotel facilities while minimizing disruption to guests
- Communicate equipment issues and recommended improvements to the Director of Engineering

Technical / Role-Specific Requirements
- Minimum 3–5 years of engineering, maintenance, or facilities experience, preferably within a hotel or hospitality environment
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred
- Strong working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and building systems
- Experience with preventative maintenance programs
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair a variety of hotel equipment and building systems
- Knowledge of building safety, fire/life safety, and OSHA requirements
- Ability to read and understand equipment manuals, technical documents, and maintenance procedures
- Experience working with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) preferred
- Basic computer skills and ability to maintain electronic maintenance records
- Ability to work effectively with outside contractors and service vendors
- Valid driver’s license preferred
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous hotel or luxury/lifestyle hospitality engineering experience preferred
- Experience working in a large hotel or full-service property preferred
- HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical certifications are a plus
- EPA certification or HVAC certification is a plus
- Experience with hotel engineering systems and preventative maintenance programs
- Experience supervising or leading an Engineering team
- Knowledge of energy management and sustainability practices
- Bilingual abilities are a plus
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift
- Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach, push, pull, and work in confined or mechanical spaces
- Ability to safely use hand and power tools
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors and in varying temperatures and conditions
- Ability to climb ladders and access mechanical and equipment areas
- Ability to respond quickly to maintenance and emergency situations
- Comfortable working in a physically active and hands-on environment
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Technical school, vocational training, or associate degree in engineering, facilities management, HVAC, electrical, mechanical systems, or a related field preferred
- Equivalent combination of education, certifications, and relevant experience will be considered
