Job description

Join our team at the Guardian and be a part of a diverse and inclusive global organisation that delivers fearless, investigative journalism, and holds power to account. Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals, and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture.

We are now looking for a writer/reporter for US newsletters and live news. This key role on a small but growing team will help drive our newsletter expansion in the US, and will also support our 24-hour news operation.

You will have three main responsibilities:

  • Helping to create our First Thing flagship newsletter for US readers five days a week
  • Taking on the role of lead writer on this and other US newsletters when other writers are away
  • Writing stories about US news and politics during UK morning hours

While this role is based in the UK, it is focused on US news and issues. It will require flexibility, comfort working with multiple editors in different time zones, knowledge of US current events and familiarity with US reader habits and interests. The ideal candidate thrives working at a fast pace, obsesses over the news, and writes clearly and accurately.

This is a full-time 12-month fixed-term contract or internal staff secondment with a 5-day week working pattern.

About the role

  • Write time-sensitive components of First Thing, a daily morning newsletter for US readers, from Monday to Friday. (The newsletter is sent every weekday at 7am EST/4am PST/12 pm GMT.) These components may include summarising news that took place overnight or updating a lead story with new information
  • Provide cover for writers of First Thing and additional lifestyle newsletters during absences and leave
  • Develop evergreen newsletter content on news and lifestyle topics
  • Conduct archival research and fact checking as well as original reporting
  • Report and write news stories, live blogs, explainers and news features on US national news and politics, as assigned by a news editor or pitched.
  • Produce fast, accurate and well-written stories on some of the major news subject areas, with an emphasis on coverage of politics and foreign affairs.
  • Produce accurate and compelling daily news stories with flair, originality and knowledge of Guardian style and tone.

About you

  • Demonstrable experience in digital reporting, ideally for a prominent newspaper or website
  • Background with reader-centered journalism, particularly with newsletters or social media
  • Excellent knowledge of the US news landscape across multiple topic areas and how that news might also work for a global audience
  • Demonstrable interest in / track record writing about US political news and major national news
  • Awareness of the importance of house style and the Guardian’s high editorial standards
  • Good understanding of media law
  • Enthusiasm for variety; you could be working in a range of formats each day
  • Ideally you will have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to the role.

We actively encourage applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media.

We operate in a hybrid environment working at least three days a week from our offices in King’s Cross in London.

Job share applications are welcome. If you are keen to apply jointly with someone else as a job share, you should make a single application and combine your application documents.

The minimum salary for this NUJ position starts from £58,000, with a package commensurate with the skills, level of experience and responsibilities of the position.
