Job Description

Experienced CNC Machinist - Shafting Specialist

Curtis Machine Company Dodge City, Kansas

We're looking for proven machining knowledge and the ability to take a shaft from print to finished part.

Curtis Machine Company is seeking an experienced CNC Shafting Specialist with strong technical knowledge of CNC turning, precision shaft machining, setup, and troubleshooting. This is not an entry-level or machine operator-only position. Qualified candidates must be able to perform setups independently, understand why machining adjustments are needed, and consistently produce parts to specification.

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience machining precision shafts and similar components on CNC lathes.
  • Ability to independently set up equipment, select tooling and workholding, establish offsets, and verify the first piece.
  • Working knowledge of CNC programming, including reading, editing, and troubleshooting programs.
  • Strong understanding of blueprints, GD&T, tolerances, surface finish, and inspection requirements.
  • Knowledge of shaft machining challenges, including deflection, chatter, taper, runout, and concentricity.
  • Ability to determine appropriate speeds, feeds, and cutting methods for different materials.
  • Proficiency with micrometers, indicators, bore gauges, and other precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to identify the cause of machining problems and make effective corrections.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and machine shafts with precision journals, shoulders, grooves, threads, and other required features.
  • Evaluate drawings and plan the machining sequence.
  • Select and adjust tooling and workholding to maintain accuracy and repeatability.
  • Inspect first-piece and in-process work to verify compliance with specifications.
  • Troubleshoot dimensional variation, tool wear, and surface finish issues.
  • Improve machining methods, reduce unnecessary setup time, and prevent scrap.
  • Communicate technical concerns clearly with engineering, quality, and production personnel.
  • Maintain safe work practices and accurate production records.

Who Should Apply

We want a machinist who can explain how and why a part is machined a certain way-not simply load a part and run an established cycle. Candidates should bring sound judgment, independent problem-solving skills, and pride in precision workmanship.

Experience with machining between centers, steady rests, live tooling, and tight-tolerance shaft work is highly valued.

Candidates should be prepared to discuss specific shaft machining projects, independent setups, program changes, and troubleshooting examples during the interview.
