Job Description
OUR NATIONAL CONVERSATION (ONC) seeks to reduce partisanship and promote effective solutions to America’s challenges. Powered by America’s youth, we host a media outlet, produce educational materials and facilitate dialogue intended to make America a better country.
The Managing Editor directs a team of writers and editor's, assigns the work, holds the schedule, and is accountable for the ONC publication pipeline. Most of the work is coordinating and developing other people rather than producing your own content.
WHAT YOU WOULD DO
• Own the publication calendar and the story pipeline across written formats
• Set deadlines and follow up when interns slip up
• Manage and revise “How-To” documents to teach new interns quickly about existing processes for publishing content at ONC
• Chair standing editorial meetings weekly
• Attend Leadership meetings and All-Staff meetings to provide updates
• Help HR recruit, interview, and onboard new contributors
• Train new editors and writers and set the standards on sourcing, process, and format
• Safeguard ONC's nonpartisan positioning and branding
• Coordinate with other teams, such as Media & Marketing, for opportunities to do joint projects
This is an unpaid internship
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
• Writing or editing experience in any setting: professional, academic, student publication, or news organization
• Ability to edit for argument and structure, in addition to grammar and style
• Experience coordinating a group toward a deadline
• Comfort giving direction and holding people to their commitments
• Sound judgment about sourcing, attribution, and factual accuracy
• Demonstrated follow-through on sustained commitments
