Job Description

Control and Automation Engineer

Location:Bournemouth
Salary:£35,000 - £45,000
Employment type: Permanent, Full time

A specialist engineering manufacturer is looking for a Control and Automation Engineer to develop, improve and support the control systems used across its expanding product range.

This is a varied engineering role combining controls hardware, software development, user-interface design and system integration. You will work on new product development while also helping modernise and support existing and legacy control systems.

The company is open-minded regarding your technical background. You could come from PLC automation, embedded systems, industrial software or a combination of these areas.

The role will include:

  • Designing control and automation systems for new products
  • Developing software applications, HMIs and user interfaces
  • Specifying PLCs, motor controllers, control hardware and electronic components
  • Integrating controls, software and hardware into complete products
  • Working with suppliers and subcontractors on components, firmware and software
  • Supporting and troubleshooting existing and legacy control systems
  • Contributing to design reviews, project plans and technical documentation
  • Working closely with Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Manufacturing teams
  • Helping improve engineering processes, documentation and product compliance
  • Investigating new technologies, platforms and development tools

Were looking for experience in some of the following areas:

  • PLCs, soft PLCs, HMIs or industrial control systems
  • CODESYS or IEC 61131-3 Structured Text
  • Python, C, C#, JavaScript, HTML or CSS
  • PC-based or web-based control applications
  • Microprocessors, electronics or single-board computers
  • Motor controllers, instrumentation or interface hardware
  • Software version control
  • Controls integration within manufactured equipment or machinery
  • Supporting and upgrading legacy control systems

You do not need to have worked with every technology listed. The most important qualities are broad technical curiosity, a methodical approach and the ability to develop practical, reliable systems within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.

This would suit a Control Systems Engineer, Automation Engineer, Software and Controls Engineer or technically versatile engineer who enjoys working across hardware and software rather than being restricted to one platform.
