Job Description

The Systems Programmer is responsible for developing and maintaining the game’s core simulation, planning, and supporting gameplay systems. They work closely with the Director of Engineering and game design to translate combat, narrative, progression, and systemic RPG requirements into reliable, maintainable technical solutions.

The servicer has primary ownership of the combat simulator/planner and related systems, and supports the integration of narrative, content-authoring, and other external or in-house tools where required. With a strong general engineering focus, they help ensure that complex game systems remain modular, testable, deterministic, and easy to iterate on throughout development.

SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Owns the development and maintenance of the combat simulation and planner systems.
  • Develops and expands the simulation framework used to model, validate, and support turn-based combat.
  • Works closely with game design to translate combat rules, character abilities, progression, and balance requirements into robust technical systems.
  • Designs systems with determinism, testability, maintainability, and iteration speed as core requirements.
  • Supports the integration of narrative, content-authoring, and game-data tools as required by the project.
  • Contributes to the development of in-house tools and workflows where existing solutions do not meet project requirements.
  • Develops interfaces between simulation, narrative, progression, and Unreal-facing systems.
  • Builds data structures, APIs, and supporting systems that allow gameplay content to be consumed reliably by Unreal Engine.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Engineering on overall system architecture and technical decisions.
  • Identifies potential technical risks in complex interconnected systems and proposes scalable solutions.
  • Helps maintain clear separation between core game logic and Unreal-specific presentation and implementation.
  • Supports debugging and investigation of complex gameplay and systemic issues.
  • Develops tools and workflows that allow game design to test, validate, and iterate on systems efficiently.
  • Maintains clear and extensible code that can evolve as combat and RPG systems increase in complexity.
  • Supports Unreal-side implementation when required, while maintaining primary ownership of simulation, planner, and supporting systems.
  • Helps ensure that core gameplay logic remains stable and predictable throughout development.
  • Reduces technical bottlenecks by independently owning complex engineering tasks outside the core Unreal implementation workload.
