Job description

Position description

Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting, defending, and empowering public-interest journalism, is hiring a multimedia editor to support the execution of our visual strategy, working across programs to grow outreach and further the impact of our work using video and other multimedia.

Reporting to the deputy director of audience, this position collaborates across all teams to ensure that FPF’s advocacy campaigns, digital security expertise, technology projects, and reporting on press freedom achieve maximum visibility and reach. The multimedia editor will serve as the audience team’s primary subject matter expert on short-form video content and will be part of a team that executes FPF’s strategy for sustained audience growth on visual-first social platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Own visual-first platforms — including Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and other platforms’ native studios — driving and implementing platform-specific strategies and best practices.

  • Lead the end-to-end video production life cycle, from concept development, pitching, and scripting to filming, editing, captioning, distribution, and site embedding, ensuring high-quality, accessible, engaging, shareable, and mission-aligned video storytelling.

  • Rapidly produce and edit video clips from live events, hearings, and public and media appearances, ensuring timely distribution across platforms.

  • Routinely review analytics to report back on the progress of audience growth.

  • Create complementary multimedia assets, including infographics, graphics, carousels, thumbnails, and social-native visuals to support visual storytelling.

  • Assume responsibilities of social publishing, as directed.

  • Drive audience growth and engagement through platform-specific optimization, and through collaborations with partner organizations and outlets.

  • Analyze and report on video performance metrics, leveraging insights (e.g., retention, watch time, engagement) to continuously refine content strategy and inform editorial decision-making.

  • Build and maintain a centralized video asset management system, ensuring proper tagging, archiving, and accessibility of multimedia content for efficient repurposing.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with editorial, advocacy, digital security, and development teams to align video production with breaking news, campaigns, digital security guides, and fundraising initiatives.

  • Engage with audiences on visual platforms, including responding to comments and to direct messages in a timely, brand-consistent manner.

  • Travel as needed for video assignments.

  • Perform additional duties, as assigned by the deputy director of audience.

Qualifications

Required

  • A passion for the First Amendment and protecting the press freedom rights of all.

  • At least three years of video editing and scriptwriting experience.

  • Multimedia skills, including creating graphics, and visual and audio editing.

  • Familiarity with native and third-party analytics platforms.

  • Excellent writing and copyediting skills, preferably with experience in AP style, and a strong understanding of copy standards and proofreading methods.

  • Strong editorial and news judgment, as well as political awareness.

  • A proven ability to translate complex issues into succinct, accessible language for social videos.

  • Basic understanding of HTML.

  • An independent yet collaborative approach; reliable team player adept at working in a remote workplace with limited opportunities for in-person interaction with colleagues based outside of NYC.

  • Strong project management skills, meticulous attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to set priorities and complete tasks in a timely manner.

  • Openness to explore, learn, and stay abreast of new developments in a rapidly evolving multimedia field.

Preferred

  • Experience working directly with journalists and media, especially in a vertical video format.

  • Fluency in Spanish.
