L2 Network Engineer

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced L2 network engineer to join our infrastructure team. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining, configuring, and troubleshooting complex enterprise network infrastructure. You will handle escalations from Level 1 support, perform advanced network administration, monitor system performance, and ensure high availability, security, and scalability across routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Network Operations & Maintenance: Deploy, configure, and maintain enterprise network hardware, including Cisco/Aruba switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless access points.

• Escalation Support (L2): Serve as the escalation point for complex Tier 1 networking issues, performing deep-dive troubleshooting for connectivity, packet loss, latency, and hardware failures.

• Firewall & Security Administration: Configure and manage security policies, VPN tunnels (IPsec/SSL), access control lists (ACLs), and NAT rules on firewalls (Palo Alto, Fortinet, or Cisco ASA).

• Routing & Switching: Manage and optimise Layer 2 and Layer 3 protocols, including VLANs, STP, Link Aggregation (LACP), OSPF, BGP, and EIGRP.

• Monitoring & Optimisation: Monitor network performance, bandwidth utilization, and uptime using tools such as SolarWinds, PRTG, or Wireshark; proactively address potential bottlenecks.

• Documentation & Compliance: Maintain comprehensive network topology diagrams (Visio), standard operating procedures (SOPs), inventory logs, and configuration backups.

• Change Management: Execute network upgrades, patches, and firmware updates during scheduled maintenance windows following formal change control procedures.

Qualifications & Key Skills

• Routing Protocols: BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, Static Routing.

• Switching & L2 Technologies: VLANs, Trunking (802.1Q), Spanning Tree (STP/RSTP/MSTP), VXLAN, EtherChannel.

• Security & Firewalls: Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco ASA, IPsec VPN, SSL VPN, NAT/PAT.

• Network Tools: Wireshark, SolarWinds, PRTG, Cisco DNA Center, NetFlow/IPFIX analysis.

• Wireless: Cisco / Aruba WLAN Controllers, Enterprise Wi-Fi architecture.

• Experience: 3–5 years of hands-on network engineering/administration experience in an enterprise or MSP environment.

• Certifications (Preferred): CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) is required; CCNP (Enterprise/Security) or Network+ is a strong plus.

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or equivalent practical experience.

• Soft Skills: Excellent analytical problem-solving skills, strong verbal and written communication, and the ability to work effectively in a team.
