Senior Magento Developer

I'm working with a business that runs its ecommerce on an established Magento 2 platform and i'm looking for someone who can keep it running smoothly while it keeps evolving.

This isn't a ticket-taking role. You'll be the client's go-to Magento expert and sit between the internal team and their digital agency. You'll set the technical direction, sense-check what the agency proposes and make sure what gets shipped is built properly.

It suits a contractor who likes ownership. You'll get a platform you can genuinely shape, a business that listens and a mix of BAU, integration work and new feature builds.

The Details

• Keep the live Magento 2 store stable, secure and performant day to day
• Triage and fix production issues, bugs and checkout or order flow problems
• Apply security patches and manage extension updates and compatibility
• Review the current version, PHP stack and hosting, and set out an upgrade path where needed
• Monitor performance across caching, indexing, Varnish, Redis and search

• Design and build integrations between Magento and third party systems such as ERP, PIM, OMS, payments, shipping and marketing platforms
• Work with REST and GraphQL APIs, webhooks, message queues and scheduled import or export jobs
• Make integrations resilient with clear logging, error handling and monitoring

Technical lead for the digital agency

• Act as the client's technical point of contact for their digital agency
• Give technical direction on architecture, approach and priorities
• Review agency estimates, specifications and pull requests and challenge where needed
• Translate business requirements into clear technical briefs
• Own release coordination and environments so nothing lands in production untested

Essential

• 5+ years commercial Magento 2 (Open Source or Adobe Commerce) development, ideally as a contractor
• Strong PHP 8.x and deep knowledge of Magento architecture: modules, plugins, observers, dependency injection, EAV and service contracts
• Proven integration delivery using Magento REST and GraphQL APIs with third party platforms
• Experience owning a live production store, including patching, upgrades and incident handling
• MySQL, Composer, Git and CI/CD pipelines
• Confidence working with and directing external agencies, including reviewing their code and estimates
• Clear communicator who can explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders

Nice to have

• Magento 2 version upgrades, particularly moving to 2.4.8 or 2.4.9
• Adobe Commerce Cloud, AWS or Hyvä theme experience
• Performance tuning with Varnish, Redis, OpenSearch and New Relic
• Adobe Commerce certification
• ERP or PIM integration experience (for example Sage, NetSuite, Dynamics or Akeneo)

• On site: 2 days a week in South Manchester for agency sessions, stakeholder time and planning. The rest is remote.
