As Gridmatic's first internal legal counsel, you will have unparalleled ownership in building the commercial legal function from the ground up, offering significant growth and impact in the renewable energy sector. Apply to shape the future of legal operations at a dynamic energy company!
Quick Overview
Job Description
The Role:
We are looking to hire our first internal legal counsel at Gridmatic! You will report directly to Gridmatic’s Chief Commercial Officer (CCO). Because Gridmatic does not currently have a General Counsel, you will have a high degree of ownership and responsibility to build out our commercial legal functions. We are looking for an autonomous, startup-minded attorney who is an excellent communicator and can take the reins on drafting, negotiating, and setting up commercial processes from scratch to ensure we scale efficiently and safely.
What you’ll do:
- Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a core set of energy agreements, including renewable and storage power purchase agreements and tolling agreements.
- Managing relationships with outside counsel.
- Managing and negotiating trading frameworks including ISDAs and EEIs.
- Structuring and negotiating retail electric power customer contracts.
- Establishing and standardizing legal policies, processes, templates, and workflows for a fast-paced environment.
- Working closely and communicating effectively with commercial colleagues to align legal strategy with company goals.
What we're looking for:
- Active License: Must be an active, licensed attorney.
- Experience Level: 4 to 10 years of legal experience.
- Energy Contracting Background: You must have strong energy contracting experience. You are likely an experienced associate at a law firm with a strong energy practice, or you started your career at such a firm and transitioned in-house to a power company or commodities trader.
- Autonomy & Communication: Because this role can be remote and is our first legal hire, you must be highly autonomous, a clear and proactive communicator, and comfortable operating without an existing playbook.
Nice to haves (but not must-haves):
- Energy Regulatory Experience: Familiarity or hands-on experience navigating energy regulatory frameworks (FERC, ISOs, state PUCs, CFTC, etc.) is a strong plus.
- A diversity of experience applicable to Gridmatic’s ecosystem (energy, trading, investment funds, technology, startups). We recognize it is highly unlikely to find an energy contracting associate with deep experience across all of these fields, so we consider exposure to any combination of these areas a strong bonus rather than a strict requirement.
Benefits
- Continuing Education Opportunities.
- Flexible PTO.
- Medical, Dental and Vision plans with competitive employer contributions.
- Pre-Tax commuter benefits.
- $1500/year non profit donation matching program through Millie.
- Home Office Stipend.
Protecting your future for you and your family:
- 401K contribution match up to 4%
- Company-paid parental leave.
- Company Paid Life Insurance.
- Stock Option Loan Program.
