Job Description

Job DescriptionTax Manager\nGaithersburg, MD | Hybrid\n$125,000 to $155,000 + bonus & profit sharing\n\nThere’s a big difference between saying a Tax Manager role is “advisory” and actually giving someone interesting things to advise on.\nThis firm does the latter.\nYou’d be joining an established CPA and advisory firm in Gaithersburg, working closely with privately held businesses and their owners across tax planning, growth, succession and M&A transactions.\n\nThey’re particularly interested in someone with strong M&A experience who enjoys being involved before the decision is made, not simply dealing with the tax consequences afterwards.\nWhat the role actually looks like\nThis is a broad Tax Manager position, but with considerably more advisory and transaction exposure than the average role.\nYou'll be involved in:\n\n M&A and transaction-related tax matters\n Deal and entity structuring\n Tax planning for privately held businesses and their owners\n Succession and transition planning\n Complex business and individual tax matters\n Managing and developing client relationships\n Reviewing complex work and resolving technical issues\n Mentoring and developing Seniors and staff\n\n\nThe interesting part is how closely those pieces connect.\nYou might work with a business owner for years on their tax planning, then help them navigate an acquisition, restructuring or eventual sale.\nThat continuity makes the advisory work considerably more meaningful.\n\nClients will actually know who you are\nAt Manager level, you're expected to own relationships.\nYou'll work directly with business owners, understand what's happening within their companies and become somebody they call when they're considering a major decision.\nThat's particularly important around M&A.\nThe best tax advice usually arrives before a deal is agreed, not once everyone is already sitting around waiting for it to close.\n\nWhy this firm?\nYou get the sophistication of a growing advisory firm without disappearing into a huge organisation.\nThere’s a collaborative culture, strong technical support and genuine room to build around your strengths.

If M&A and transaction work is an area you want to develop further, there's enough work here for it to become a meaningful part of your career.\n\nThe wider package includes:\n\n Hybrid working\n 401(k) match and profit sharing\n Flexible summer schedules\n PTO\n Healthcare, dental and vision\n Parental leave\n Professional development and CPA support\n Leadership development opportunities\n Firm-sponsored social events and trips\n\nIt's the sort of environment built around keeping good people rather than continually replacing them.\n\nWho they're looking for\nYou'll need strong public accounting tax experience and the confidence to manage both clients and teams.\nFor this hire, M&A experience is particularly important.\nYou'll likely be a strong fit if you:\n\n Have solid business tax experience\n Bring meaningful M&A or transaction exposure\n Enjoy working with privately held businesses\n Are comfortable managing complex client relationships\n Have experience reviewing and developing staff\n Want more planning, consulting and advisory work\n Are looking for a longer-term route into senior leadership\n\n\nWhy make the move?\nIf you've built good M&A experience, it's worth going somewhere that will actually use it.\nThis is an opportunity to stay close to technically interesting tax work while becoming more involved in the decisions behind it - acquisitions, sales, succession, structuring and the bigger questions business owners actually need help answering.\nLess processing what happened.\nMore influencing what happens next.\n\nNot ready with a resume?

Or want a bit more information before applying? That’s fine. Apply the old fashioned way, or simply reach out to me on LinkedIn or through the Distinct Recruitment website. I’ll happily talk you through the role, the firm, and where it could take you before you make any commitments.\n\nI’m Abigail Stephen, Recruiter at Distinct. I don’t just look at job specs. I look at people, and where they’ll thrive. It’s not about filling gaps. It’s about finding a fit that lasts.\nOutside of work, balance for me is Pilates to reset, travel to explore, and skiing to recharge.

Because the truth is, you don’t slog through hours for the love of a spreadsheet. You do it for the freedom it buys you. Same principle here.
