Job Description

Principal Powertrain Systems Engineer
Derbyshire, UK

£60-75k + bonus + benefits

As principal engineer you will be responsible for the delivery of base engine systems for a new engine programme. This will involve working with subcontractors that will provide detailed level design expertise.

Your role will involve working with the chief engineer and other principal engineers to establish system requirements and specifications, oversea the detailed design, integration, development and validation of the complete engine system.

Your background: Principal Powertrain Systems Engineer
  • Proven direct experience with the design / development of base engine (ICE) systems. This may include, for example, Valvetrain design (DOHC / SOHC, etc), Major castings, Cooling Systems, CCV (Crank case ventilation), Aftertreatment (e.g., DEF etc), Fuel systems, Air handling (e.g., intake manifold, throttle, etc)
  • Technical leadership and project management capability
  • Excellent grasp of mechanical engineering principles and the ability to apply them to a broad range of complex mechanical engineering problems and challenges
This is not a CAD design position but involves systems level design of engine systems (systems specification, creating of test and validation plans, design tolerances, DFMEA and problem-solving activities, etc).

Required experience / knowledge: Powertrain systems engineer
  • A degree or higher qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant subject (e.g. mechanical design, automotive engineering, motorsport engineering, etc)
  • Minimum of 8 years of engine design experience gained post academia (gasoline / diesel / H2)
  • Experience of the design / development of ICEs for applications such as automotive, motorsport, agriculture, rail / rolling stock, marine, or power generation, etc.
  • Excellent grasp of mechanical engineering principles and the ability to apply them to a broad range of complex mechanical engineering problems and challenges
  • Experience of systems level design (technical specifications, requirements decomposition, validation activities, DFMEA, DVP&R, 8D problem solving, etc)
  • Experience in one or more of the following engine design disciplines; Valvetrain design (DOHC / SOHC, etc), Gears (timing drive design), CCV (Crank case ventilation), Aftertreatment (e.g., DEF etc), Fuel systems (fuel delivery, handling, H2 would be very useful), Air handling (e.g., intake manifold, throttle, etc), Major castings, etc.
As a principal engineer you are effectively a lead engineer, team leader, hence you will not only have technical responsibility for your engine system but will lead the delivery through external engineering resource. Engineers should be able to demonstrate competence in this way of working.

This Principal Powertrain Systems Engineer is based on site 5 days per week, and hybrid working is not supported.
The role is commutable from Rocester, Stoke on Trent, Derby, Nottingham, Birmingham, Uttoxeter, Stafford, and Burton.
