Job Description

SQL Server / Cloud DBA – VDOT Tolling

Location: Virginia
Department: VDOT – Information Technology Division (ITD)
Team: Tolling Engineering & Operations

VDOT is seeking an experienced SQL Server / Cloud DBA to administer, support, and optimize SQL Server and cloud databases supporting the Tolling environment. The role also includes application and help desk support as part of the Tolling team rotation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer, monitor, and support SQL Server 2019+ environments.

  • Perform SQL Server installation, upgrades, patching, migrations, and failover clustering.

  • Support SQL Server high availability, clustering, mirroring, and disaster recovery.

  • Troubleshoot database connectivity, security, blocking, and deadlocks.

  • Tune long-running queries and optimize Very Large Databases (2TB+).

  • Use Extended Events, Query Store, wait statistics, and other tools for performance troubleshooting.

  • Support SQL Server environments running on Windows and Azure Cloud.

  • Develop and optimize T-SQL queries and database processes.

  • Support SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS environments.

  • Review existing database implementations and recommend improvements.

  • Use OS scripting and automation for database maintenance and diagnostics.

  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams and provide application/help desk support.

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years of Microsoft SQL Server DBA experience.

  • 3–4 years of hands-on experience upgrading E-ZPass Virginia Tolling SQL Server environments from SQL Server 2012 to 2019.

  • Experience with Compatibility Evaluation, Query Tuning Assistant, and Database Migration Assistant.

  • Strong experience troubleshooting deadlocks, blocking, and production SQL workloads.

  • Experience tuning 2TB+ databases, including indexing and resource contention.

  • Strong T-SQL and SQL Server performance tuning skills.

  • Experience with SQL Server clustering and high availability.

  • 1+ year of Azure, Snowflake, or Databricks experience; certification may substitute for experience.

  • Experience with Windows Server environments.

  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience/education.

Preferred Skills

  • SQL Server 2019+

  • Azure Cloud / Azure databases

  • Snowflake and/or Databricks

  • SSIS, SSAS, SSRS

  • Data modeling

  • SQL Server 2022/2025 and failover clustering

Additional Requirements

  • Fingerprint-based background check required.

  • Contractor must maintain current technical knowledge through continuing education.
