Job description

Assistant Chief Engineer / Lead Mechanical Engineer – High-Voltage Battery Systems

Location: Novi, MI | 100% Onsite
Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire
Compensation: Competitive, based on experience

About the Opportunity

We are partnering with an innovative battery technology company seeking an experienced Assistant Chief Engineer / Lead Mechanical Engineer to support the design and development of advanced high-voltage battery systems.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role for someone who has direct battery pack development experience and enjoys owning complex engineering challenges from start to finish.

The ideal candidate is a strong mechanical engineer who can remain hands-on with design while taking broader technical ownership across engineering, suppliers, prototyping, manufacturing, and testing. This is an opportunity to work on cutting-edge battery technology in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where engineers have a direct impact on product development.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design, development, and integration of high-voltage battery packs and related components.
  • Remain hands-on with CAD, designing parts, assemblies, enclosures, and mechanical systems.
  • Take ownership of engineering challenges from initial design through prototyping, assembly, testing, and validation.
  • Collaborate with electrical, thermal, and systems engineering teams to ensure successful battery pack integration.
  • Work directly with suppliers and manufacturing teams on component development, sourcing, and design improvements.
  • Support prototype builds, troubleshoot technical issues, and drive design modifications based on testing and performance.
  • Lead technical discussions with customers, vendors, and internal engineering teams.
  • Evaluate design tradeoffs, identify potential risks, and independently drive engineering solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to other engineers while remaining actively involved in day-to-day design work.

Required Qualifications

  • Direct, hands-on experience with high-voltage battery pack design, development, or integration.
  • Strong mechanical engineering background with experience designing parts and assemblies using CAD software.
  • Experience taking products through the full development lifecycle, including design, prototyping, supplier coordination, assembly, and testing.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently own complex engineering problems and drive solutions.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with electrical, thermal, manufacturing, and other engineering teams.
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills, including troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and design improvements.
  • Experience communicating directly with customers, suppliers, or vendors on technical requirements and engineering decisions.
  • Ability to work onsite in Novi, Michigan.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with SolidWorks, Onshape, Creo, CATIA, or Siemens NX; SolidWorks experience is a plus.
  • Background in automotive electrification, EV battery systems, commercial vehicle batteries, or industrial energy storage.
  • Experience with battery pack enclosures, structural components, mechanical packaging, thermal integration, and high-voltage component routing.
  • Understanding of battery pack architecture, sizing, BMS integration, and diagnostics.
  • Familiarity with GD&T, DFMEA, design validation, and manufacturing processes.
  • Previous experience in a Lead Engineer, Principal Engineer, Battery Pack Engineer, or similar technical leadership role.

Why This Opportunity?

  • High Ownership: Take on meaningful engineering challenges and see your work through from concept to completion.
  • Hands-On Engineering: Stay directly involved in mechanical design, prototyping, testing, and problem-solving.
  • Technical Leadership: Help drive engineering decisions and collaborate across multiple disciplines without stepping away from hands-on work.
  • Innovative Technology: Contribute to advanced high-voltage battery systems and next-generation energy solutions.
  • Long-Term Opportunity: Contract-to-hire position with the potential to transition into a permanent leadership role.

Ideal Candidate

We're looking for someone who has personally designed and developed high-voltage battery packs, not just managed projects or worked around battery technology.

This person should be comfortable getting into the details of mechanical design, working through complex technical challenges, collaborating with suppliers and customers, and taking ownership of a product through development and testing.

The strongest candidates will bring a combination of hands-on battery pack experience, mechanical design expertise, and technical leadership, with the ability to independently drive engineering solutions in a fast-moving environment.
