Job Description

We're recruiting a Mechanical Engineer / Fitter for a well-established manufacturer of food products.

The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance and availability of production machinery and equipment. You will carry out planned preventative maintenance, reactive maintenance, fault finding, repairs and mechanical installations across the site.

This is a hands-on engineering role suited to an experienced mechanical fitter who enjoys working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on production machinery and site equipment.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to mechanical breakdowns.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and identify the root cause of equipment failures.
  • Repair, replace and overhaul mechanical components.
  • Carry out routine inspections and condition monitoring of machinery.
  • Complete planned maintenance tasks in accordance with the site maintenance schedule.
  • Install, modify and commission new and existing machinery.
  • Work on equipment including conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, motors, bearings, valves, pneumatics and mechanical drives .
  • Carry out alignment, fitting, assembly and adjustment of mechanical equipment.
  • Support production teams with technical issues and minimise machinery downtime.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and update relevant documentation.
  • Work closely with electrical and controls engineers to resolve complex equipment faults.
  • Identify opportunities to improve machine reliability and reduce downtime.
  • Assist with machinery upgrades, modifications and continuous improvement projects.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are completed in line with company health & safety procedures.
  • Maintain high standards of hygiene and comply with food manufacturing site requirements.
  • Follow appropriate HACCP, BRCGS and food safety procedures where applicable.

The role may involve working on a wide range of food production and packaging equipment, including:

  • Conveyor systems
  • Packaging machinery
  • Filling and dosing equipment
  • Processing machinery
  • Pumps and motors
  • Gearboxes and drives
  • Pneumatic systems
  • Valves and actuators
  • Mixers and agitators
  • Cutting and preparation machinery
  • Weighing systems
  • Wrapping and labelling equipment
  • Automated production lines

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical engineering background and practical experience working within a manufacturing, production or FMCG environment .

You will be comfortable working hands-on, diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs in a fast-paced production environment where minimising downtime is critical.

Essential Experience:

  • Previous experience as a Mechanical Engineer, Mechanical Fitter, Maintenance Engineer or similar .
  • Strong mechanical maintenance and fault-finding skills.
  • Experience working with industrial machinery.
  • Experience with bearings, gearboxes, pumps, conveyors and mechanical drives .
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings.
  • Good understanding of preventative and reactive maintenance.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a wider engineering team.
  • Good understanding of health & safety within a manufacturing environment.

Desirable Experience:

  • Previous experience within food manufacturing, FMCG or packaging .
  • Experience working with automated production lines.
  • Pneumatics and hydraulics experience.
  • Welding/fabrication skills.
  • Experience with stainless steel equipment.
  • Experience working within a highly regulated manufacturing environment.
