Job Description

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Finance position will manage all operational accounting for the assigned entities, including the monthly closing process and balance sheet reconciliations. This position will work closely with other accounting staff and department managers to provide and analyze financial management information for the organization and will manage the annual operating and capital budget process. Additionally, this position will produce monthly ad-hoc reports to assist senior management in identification, analysis and re-forecast of monthly operational trends. This position is also the fiscal department’s liaison to other operating departments, corporate IT and HR departments, and helps centralize fiscal services.

Core Competencies

Knowledge of functional accounting processes, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash receipts, cost allocations, capital asset accounting and intercompany transactions
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial reporting standards, procedures and controls
Strong financial analysis and modeling skills with a high degree of accuracy
Ability to communicate in a clear, professional manner in both verbal and written communications
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
Knowledge of financial systems and pertinent software applications
Maintains a high level of accuracy, productivity and self direction with effective time management skills

Position Responsibilities include

Financial Reporting and Analysis
Responsible for all aspects of general ledger data entry, account reconciliation and reporting
Manage intercompany transactions, including cost transfers, allocations, management fees and eliminations
Own full-cycle accounting for the most complex parts of the entity, such as entrance fees and deferred revenues, restricted and investment funds, bond and tax credit financing, new project development and capital asset purchases; resolve escalated reconciling items and issues
Review and confirm staff journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules
Ensure critical data such as resident actuarial information and entity census reporting is complete and accurate
Create monthly financial reports for HSL reporting as well as Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Cash Flow reports from the entity trial balance, along with supporting commentary on the financial results of operations
Prepare analysis and forecasts of cash availability; manage short term cash investments
Audit, Tax and Regulatory Leadership
Serve as the primary auditor contact for assigned entities, coordinating the client request list and managing fieldwork responses
Lead the preparation for financial statement, single and compliance audits, including schedules and supporting documentation
Submit all required regulatory filings and support 990 tax filing preparation
Monitor debt covenant compliance, reserve requirements and restricted fund balances; prepare debt schedules and lender reporting
Comply with abandoned property reporting requirements
Budgeting, Forecasting and Analysis
Lead the annual operating and capital budget process for assigned entities in partnership with the Executive Directors
Build forecasts and multi-year projections, model the impact of rate, payor mix and occupancy changes and support pricing, capital planning and financing decisions.

Assist in the preparation and presentation of consolidated HSL budgets and forecasts
Support HSL strategic planning and initiatives
Technical Accounting
Research technical accounting questions, document conclusions and recommend treatment per accounting standards
Assess and implement new accounting and reporting standards affecting HSL entities
Maintain accounting policy documentation, close schedules and desktop procedures for the team
Serve as an internal technical resource on accounting standards and financial systems for the staff
Leadership
Mentor and train fiscal staff, using review findings as teaching opportunities rather than corrections; train fiscal staff on revenue, payroll, A/P and A/R processes.

Provide financial training and support to operating managers with a strong customer service focus
Lead process improvement, standardization and system implementation projects across the fiscal team. Assist with the testing and implementation of fiscal systems and software
Serve as backup to the Director of Finance during absences and peak work periods
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Finance or Accounting from a fully accredited college required
5+ years progressive accounting experience, including full-cycle close ownership across multiple entities
Demonstrated theoretical and practical knowledge of accounting concepts, practices and procedures
Demonstrated competence in pertinent computer applications and systems
Ability to communicate effectively with accounting and non-accounting staff and with outside business entities, as responsibilities require.
