Commissioning Technician - Power Systems

Our client is a long-established power generation equipment dealer with a strong Power Systems division serving hospitals, data centers, municipalities, industrial plants, and commercial facilities across the Southeast. They are adding a Commissioning Technician to own the start-up of new generator and switchgear installations – the last and most important step before a customer's standby or prime power system goes live.

This is a role for a technician who likes being the one who makes the whole system work: not just the engine, but the controls, the transfer switches, the paralleling gear, and the load test that proves it all under real conditions. You'll get OEM factory training, a clear path into senior commissioning or project lead roles, and the backing of a dealer that invests heavily in its people.

What You'll Do

•       Perform installation checks, start-up, and full commissioning of diesel and natural gas generator sets, typically in the 100 kW to 3 MW+ range, on new-sales and project installations.

•       Commission and functionally test automatic transfer switches, paralleling switchgear, and associated controls, including sequence-of-operations testing and utility/generator transfer scenarios.

•       Configure, program, and troubleshoot generator and switchgear controls using OEM controller platforms and laptop-based diagnostic and configuration software.

•       Conduct resistive and reactive load bank testing, integrated systems tests, and witness testing alongside engineers, contractors, and owner's representatives.

•       Verify installation against drawings and specifications, including fuel, exhaust, cooling, and electrical interconnects; identify and document deficiencies and punch-list items.

•       Read and interpret one-line diagrams, wiring schematics, and control drawings to diagnose and resolve issues in the field.

•       Install or repair enclosure and package accessories, battery chargers, remote annunciators, and monitoring equipment as needed to complete start-up.

•       Complete commissioning reports, test data sheets, and turnover documentation accurately and on time; walk customers through operation of their new system.

•       Support the service team on complex troubleshooting and warranty issues on recently commissioned equipment.

•       Follow all safety programs, including LOTO, arc-flash, and NFPA 70E practices, and keep a company vehicle and tools in clean, professional condition.

What You Bring

•       3+ years of hands-on experience with power generation equipment: diesel or natural gas generator sets, ATSs, and/or paralleling switchgear.

•       Direct experience with start-up or commissioning of standby or prime power systems is strongly preferred; strong field service technicians looking to move into commissioning will be considered.

•       Solid AC/DC electrical fundamentals, including three-phase power, protective relaying basics, and controls logic.

•       Ability to read schematics and one-line diagrams and to work confidently with laptop-based diagnostic and configuration tools.

•       Graduate of an electrical, diesel, or power generation technical program, or equivalent military training (e.g., Army 91D / USMC 1142).

•       Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; willingness to travel and to work extended hours during project cutovers.

Preferred

•       Experience with major generator OEMs and their controls and service software, such as Caterpillar, Cummins, Kohler, Generac Industrial, or MTU/Rolls-Royce.

•       Paralleling switchgear experience (ASCO, Russelectric, Eaton, or similar) and utility-parallel or closed-transition systems.

•       Exposure to mission-critical environments such as data centers or hospitals (NFPA 110 testing).

•       NFPA 70E training, EGSA certification, or an electrical license.

Commissioning sits at the front end of every new power project, which means steady, high-visibility work tied to one of the fastest-growing segments in the equipment world. You'll work on newer equipment, build relationships with engineers and contractors, and develop the systems-level skill set that leads into senior commissioning, project management, or service leadership.
